The towns of Murcia and Elche are each within a 30 minute drive - as is the coastal resort of Guardamar with some of the best beaches in Spain, shops, restaurants and an excellent weekly market every Wednesday morning. Elche - with its shoreline of 9km 0f white sandy beaches is also known as the "City of Palms" and located within the largest palm forest in Europe - some 200,000 protected palm trees grow in the streets and parks of the city. The city has two UNESCO awards - one for its palms and one for its religious play. Elche is also a must for shoe lovers and a visit to the Salvador Artesano shoe outlet - where there are hundreds of shoes at discounted prices in the largest shoe factory in Europe. The city of Murcia was founded by the Arabs during the 1st century, since then it has been a crossroads for different cultures. The Cathedral makes a great starting point right in the heart of the city - from here you can explore the colourful, lively, little plazas that nestle in between the narrow streets.
