Full description:

This residence in need of renovation is quite simply situated in one of the most dramatic and spectacular locations in the West of Ireland, just to the south of Killary Harbour and close to some of the most romantic and naturally beautiful beaches in Ireland, Glassilaun, Salruck, Gurteen and Lettergesh.

Killary Harbour is a steep beautiful inlet, 10 miles long and 45 metres deep between County Mayo and County Galway. Killary Harbour is a splendid sheltered deep-water anchorage and was, at different times, a base for the British Fleet and a refuge for German U-boats.

Just 4 miles away is Letterfrack, the home of the Connemara National Park and the furniture college, Conservation Letterfrack, with further pubs hotels and restaurants of repute.

The property is 45 miles from the regional capital of the West, Galway City, with its mainline road, rail and air connections and extensive and substantial cultural, commercial and retail facilities. Shannon Airport is some 2½ hours from the property, while Knock Airport is about 1½ hours.

The lands being sold extend to circa 2.06 acres of good pasture lands with an abundance of floral and fauna and a stream creating part of the western boundary. There is a range of outbuildings to the west which was the original family home and could be incorporated into any extension subject to any necessary planning constraints. There is a gated entrance from the road and the new owners will have to create a driveway up to the house.

THE HOUSE: The property has panoramic views over the Lough Fee with the mountain ranges of Letterettrin and Bunowen in the distance. The property is set at the base of Barrlugwaum and Barrlugcloghadoo mountains with the lands surrounding the property. This provides the opportunity for any purchaser to extend and develop the property in most directions should they want. It is envisaged that planning permission would be granted for the renovation/replacement of this existing dwelling house of which the new residents will benefit from outstanding views over Lough Fee. The property is in need of complete renovation but offers a potential purchaser to create a fabulous family home with truly outstanding views. There is the old family home to the rear of the house and a range buildings, enclosures and stock handling facilities to the side. The accommodation comprises of inner porch-way, living room/kitchen, sitting room and two rooms to the first floor. The floor on the first floor is not structurally safe and therefore is not accessible.

HISTORY: The artist Aloysius O`Kelly spent a number of years in the 1880`s working in this cottage by Lough Fee for the London Illustrated News. He rented the cottage from Mitchel Henry from nearby Kylemore Abbey. He produced a fascinating series of drawings that detailed the actions of the Land War and some imaginatively non-stereotypical oil paintings of life on the western seaboard. This Irish period culminated in his exhibition in the Paris Salon of 1884 of Mass in a Connemara Cabin (now on loan to the National Gallery of Ireland), the first painting of an Irish subject matter exhibited in that prestigious venue since its inauguration in the early 18th century, which he painted in this cottage.

Outside the property is set on a site of 2.06 acres with frontage onto Lough Fee which is renowned for great stocks of salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Fishing permits for lough fee are available from
