General & History

Lea Cottage was conceived during the late 1890s by Ernest Gimson the famous founder member of the Arts and Crafts Movement of that period and completed in 1898 for Mentor Gimson, Ernest's older half-brother. The Arts and Crafts Movement has emerged as the major force in the history of British design during the last 100 years and Lea Cottage was the first of three Gimson cottages built by Ernest for the family, largely summer retreats, the other cottages being "Stoneywell" and Rockyfield" both situated close by. Bentons had the privilege of selling "Rockyfield " twice and copies of the sale particulars are available. Bentons also sold Lea Cottage for the Gimson family and to the previous owners who considerably enlarged and re-thatched it and are now offering it for sale for the current owners who have further enlarged and remodelled the property and grounds. The property has therefore been through two substantial phases of restoration and refurbishment by the current (truncated)

Ernest Gimson

Ernest Gimson (1864-1919) was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as "the greatest English artist/craftsman". Gimson's flair and architectural style developed with the influence i the early years of fellow members William Morris and Philip Webb.

The Old Drawing Room

Ernest Gimson and Sidney Barnsley were huge contributors to 20th century furniture design showing a fresh and constant appreciation of the materials they used (mainly oak) combined with a respect of quality and workmanship and an understanding of construction. In September 2001, a number of Gimson pieces were sold in London, one piece exceeding £30,000. Extract letters are retained detailing the original costs associated with the building - "it amounts to £435 including everything but the carpentry, glazing and thatch, another £150 should be added to cover this". This would have been a huge sum of money in 1898 (see attached original bill of purchase). The layout of the rooms gives the principal reception rooms and bedrooms a southerly aspect with outstanding panoramic views over the forest. Internally, a great contract exists between the white walls, timbers, stone mullions and transoms of the window openings. In 1974 there was a fire at Lea Cottage which gave the (truncated)
