Property description

Tenure: Freehold

Centrally situated within the heart of Ashbury, itself nestled on the edge of the famous chalk downs and Ridgeway, this four bedroom home provides flexibility and privacy.

Originally a single storey dwelling, this lovely property has been improved to provide four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor, whilst retaining the option of a ground floor bedroom if required. A stunning living room stretches across the back of this home, with two French doors on to the rear garden and a central wood burning stove for the colder winter evenings. A second reception room/bedroom lies adjacent and would make a good-sized work-from-home office or occasional bedroom. A generous utility room provides storage and houses an oil-fired Rayburn for hot water and central heating.

To the front lies a spacious kitchen which, whilst extensively fitted, allows new owners the opportunity to add their own personality by refurbishing.

Outside, the property is approached by right of way over a neighbour's driveway, with private gates leading to an attached double garage with storage over. The gardens are generously proportioned, lying mainly to the rear and providing a high degree of privacy, laid to lawn with mature shrubs and trees.

In addition to the oil-fired Rayburn for heating and hot water, mains water, electricity and drainage are understood to be connected.

Ashbury is a charming village, dating back to at least AD 840 and steeped in history, close to the famous White Horse Hill at Uffington, and part of a wildlife conservation area. It has a public house, the Rose and Crown Hotel (which includes a post office), a Church of England primary school and a village shop with tea room. The parish church of St Mary was originally Norman but was rebuilt in the 13th century. Here, the first Sunday School in England was founded in 1777 which developed into what became Church Aided Primary School education. Ashbury Mission Hall was a "tin tabernacle" building of corrugated iron opened in 1908. The building was replaced in 1972-73 with the present Ashbury Evangelical Free Church. Ashdown House, built in about 1660 and now run by the National Trust, is about two miles south of the village.

Nearby Shrivenham (c. 4 miles) is one of the larger villages in the Vale and has a number of shops, restaurants, public houses and a doctors’ surgery as well as a primary school and Church of England and Methodist churches.

Ashbury is well located for access to the M4 motorway (c. 7 miles) and Swindon has mainline rail services.
