The Northern Powerhouse is a government initiative to better connect the core cities of the North through an investment of £7 billion. The initiative has helped position Manchester as a now-thriving cosmopolitan city built upon an industrious legacy.
The Manchester region is one of the most economically diverse in the UK.
It is the main driver of the northern economy, generating nearly 40% of total output (GVA) in the North West of England. At present, around 1.4 million jobs are provided within Greater Manchester. The economic forecasts predict an increase of up to 180,000 jobs by 2037.
As a result of the successful Northern Powerhouse initiative, Manchester's economy has nearly doubled in size since 2000, totalling �48 billion (GBP43 billion*) as of 2019.
After a slight decline as a result of the coronavirus in 2020, the economy is expected to expand by an impressive 96% and reach �84 billion (GBP75 billion*) by 2035. In tandem, GDP per capita is expected to increase to �111,500 (GBP99,200*), an increase of 72%.
The Salford Central Masterplan
This 20-year regeneration initiative is one of the UK's largest development projects, ranking 25th out of the country's 100 biggest regeneration projects.
It includes multiple key achievements including a £550 million MediaCityUK development, the massive University and Crescent Masterplan with £2.5 billion of investment and a £650 million scheme to transform Pendleton.
With more than 100,000 students attending the city's universities, Manchester has one of the largest student populations in Europe. It also has one of the largest volumes of international students at 26,000 and a graduate retention rate of 51% -second only to London in the UK.
