Description

A 1930s rendered brick under tile extended four bedroom semi-detached house with front and rear gardens, parking and a garage and situated just a mile from the station. The Chilterns were built in 1934 by John Ray Limited on land previously occupied by a house of the same name. The Hertfordshire Express reported at the time that "The houses which are being built in the centre of Hitchin, 300 feet above sea level, have Snowcrete walls and green tiled roofs which harmonise with the surrounding country." Number 30 has been sympathetically extended and improved whilst maintaining the original look and feel. The property is on a private road which is also in a conservation area to maintain the character of the area.

The extensions make this a property with a good flow through open plan ground floor rooms. It retains much of the Art Deco style of the 1930s and the sitting room and front bedroom have large bay "Crittal Windows" to the front as well as decorative leaded motif and patterned tiled fireplaces with wooden mantels and tiled hearths.

Kitchen and Dining/Sun room

The refitted kitchen has glazed doors to a patio in the rear garden, and is fitted with cream base and wall units, including glass fronted display cabinets, with granite work surfaces and an inset sink. There is a five ring gas hob, an electric double oven and an island with breakfast bar area and prep sink. The adjoining utility room has modern gas fired central heating boiler. The sun room has bi-fold doors which also open up to the garden.

First and Second Floors

Bedroom one has built in wardrobes and a decorative fireplace. Bedroom two is used as the guest room and has an en suite shower room and views over the garden. Bedroom four is also to the rear and has a built in cupboard. The main bathroom has a shower over the bath and a vanity washbasin and there is a separate cloakroom. On the second floor there is another double bedroom which has three Velux windows.

Outside

At the front there is a driveway providing off street parking for two cars, and a garage with double doors. The front garden is laid to lawn with mature trees and shrubs. The rear garden is enclosed by wooden fence panels and has a block paved patio and a lawned garden with mature trees and shrubs providing screening. There is also a garden shed.

Situation and Schooling

The property is less than 1 mile from both Hitchin town centre. Hitchin has shops, pubs and restaurants and a twice weekly open air market. The Queen Mother Theatre is a purpose built venue with a programme of professional and amateur productions, and Hitchin Swimming Centre has outdoor and indoor pools. The town has a range of schools including Hitchin Boys' and Girls' Schools which are both rated Outstanding by Ofsted.
