It is the 7th biggest of all Mediterranean and the 3rd biggest of all Greek islands with a stretching coastline of 320 km. The island is 70 km in length, 45 km in width with a geographical mass of 1630 sq. km. Situated on the North East Aegean Sea, 180 miles from Athens and 8-10 miles from Asia Minor it is populated by about 110.000 people. Among this number there are people from all over Greece as well as 4.500 Uni students in the University of the Aegean who keep the capital Mytilini vibrant
It is the perfect destination for any traveller who wants to experience the authentic Greek island life, without being worried if there are enough things to do. People in Lesvos have kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly modern lives. The island of Lesbos is almost self sufficient. The variety of landscape, the award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and description, the mild climate and long hours of sunshine all year round, the rich historical, cultural and spiritual perspective, make LESBOS an island of many options and all seasons. Lesvos Island attracts artists, nature lovers, fans of alternative/traditional living and pensioners who seek a home away from home.

Polichnitos is a small town (3.162 people) and the administrative centre of the region with the houses built in a very impressive architectural style. As you enter Polichnitos you will be welcomed by the resident white stork on top of the tall chimney of the old Olive Press, a permanent resident all year around and the mascot of the town. This building was once an olive press which has now been converted to a Conference Centre. A little further on you will find St George's Church (the patron of the town) and the 200 year old, three tiered belfry. The town has a Town Hall, Magistrates Court, Sports Ground, Police Station, Schools, Museums, Banks, ATM, Chemists, Dentists, Health Centre, Bus Station, Taxi Rank , hardware stores, grocery stores, fishmongers, butchers, bakery, hairdressers, clothing/shoe stores, and of course lots of kafeneia, cafeterias, bars. For more information see & . The women of Polichnitos have their own Co Operative Workshop & Shop where they prepare and sell traditional sweets, cakes, pasta and alcoholic drinks.
Just as you exiting Polichnitos and heading for Vatera & the beach, there is a left turning that will take you to the Thermal Springs of Polichnitos, one of two thermal springs in Lesvos, which is on of the hottest mineral springs in Europe (60 - 90 Degrees). In fact there are five springs in total but only three are in use. The bath house with the original pools built during the Turkish occupation is retained and used today (one for males & one for females). The facilities have been upgraded and improved for showering and changing. There is a refectory area where drinks and snacks are served and local products are sold. The Baths are open all year round. Skala Polichnitos is a very picturesque fishing village , located app. 4 km from Polichnitos and is considered traditionally as its summer extension. Over the years people living in Polichnitos have gravitated towards the sea and Skala Polichnitos got populated all year around. Most residents are fishermen, farmers or retirees and recently foreign property buyers that appreciate the rustic character of the village.

Fringed with lush vegetation and olive groves it faces the west coast of the Gulf of Kalloni and has unparallel panoramic views in the gulf. The houses with their gardens and orchards are gathered around the little harbour which is always busy since it is surrounded by tavernas and coffee bars.

The Salt Pans of Polichnitos are located at the far end of Skala and produce the whitest salt in Europe which is harvested once yearly. The Salt Pans are also home to the flamingos and many other species of birds, which birdwatchers from all over the word come to observe every Spring & Autumn. Autumn birdwatching at Skala Polichnitos is a very rewarding experience since the Salt Pans here are much wetter than at Skala Kallonis.

The village has a thriving fishing industry, with the famous sardella (sardine) amongst other fish, being fished here and scallops , mussels and other seafood which are exported in tones. The Salt is also loaded here & shipped off for packaging and export.

It retains its traditional charm and authenticity with the natural hospitality of the villagers which has persuaded foreigners to start buying houses with land in the area.

In the months of July & August each year the Fiesta of Ouzo & the Fiesta of Trata (the sardine fishing boat) are celebrated. Dates differ each year, so check with the locals or at the Town Hall.

Travelling to Lesvos

Can you fly directly from the UK? - Yes, there are direct Saturday flights to Lesvos with Thomas Cook .
In any case Lesbos is very well connected internationally and nationally all year around. If you are traveling to Lesbos via Athens you can book cheap flights with to Athens and after that you can take a domestic flight with or OR you can catch a ferry from Piraeus with or OR you can fly with all the way through from Heathrow-Athens-Mytilene.
