The Story

Standing at one of the many picture windows at Gwylfan-y-Glaerwen, Patricia and Charles Lester remark on the sheer perfection of their breathtaking home. Not only is the unique property set in splendour on the picturesque Welsh coast but it is also an enchanting creation in itself, and very much a work of art. International couture fashion designers, Patricia and Charles have made it their life's work for the past 19 years. They have poured their creativity and skills into its design and realisation to create a magnificent place to relax, entertain and soak up the serenity of the setting. "For us the main attraction originally was the location - this place is absolutely incredible," Patricia says. Charles adds: "We wanted something within sight and sound of the sea and when we first saw it we did not even speak to each other because we knew we had found the right place. The setting was so beautiful and the views so amazing that there was no question about it as far as we were concerned."

TIMELESS QUALITY

Originally set on a nine-hole golf course, the building itself was initially destined to become a clubhouse but the Lesters aim was to transform it into something quite spectacular. Highly experienced in project development and architectural restoration, the couple, who are known for their exquisite fabric designs, which are worn by some of the best-known names in film, opera and pop music, relished the opportunity to create the house of their dreams. "Because of the setting, it had to be a property that was also stunning and, of course, it had to make the most the wonderful views," Charles explains. "We did not want it to have a date stamp on it - it was important to us that it had a timeless quality."

PICTURE WINDOWS

The idea was to create a striking property, which encompassed dramatic spaces suitable for lavish entertaining and exhibitions, as well as more intimate areas for quiet contemplation. "It was designed to include approximately 70 windows and to ensure there was a different picture through each of them," Patricia says. "We wanted rooms to be generous in size and to have spaces between them - and we wanted to take our time over it, working very closely with our own building team." Beautiful character features, many of which were reclaimed and collected by the Lesters over the years, were carefully worked into the design. The staircase and balustrades on the gallery have been bespoke crafted from reclaimed oak pews. Marble and granite has been used for floors and walls and solid oak parquet floor in the main room came from Roch Castle. The Bath stone used for building the two conservatories has also been used to create character features in the house. "All three of the fireplaces were designed by us and all the stone was cut and dressed on the premises," Charles adds.

GLORIOUS VIEWS

The impressive house now features seven receptions rooms on the ground floor with an additional studio/games room on the first floor. There are two substantial Bath stone conservatories, each with a balcony incorporated into the roof. "The principal reception room is a lovely space for a large party while the smaller rooms are ideal for more intimate gatherings or quiet study" The master bedroom has large windows framing the views towards Laugharne and Tenby, as well as The Gower. Through an archway is a magnificent en suite bathroom, with a solid mahogany floor, copper bath, with gold taps, and two polished stone sinks set in pink granite. "This bedroom has French windows on to one of the large balconies, where it is lovely to step out into the sunshine on a summer's morning," Charles says. "This is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy watching the sea and the wild-life."

BACK TO NATURE

The couple have also gained great pleasure from the grounds at Gwylfan-y-Glaerwen, which means watching place - or tower - of bright, shining water in Welsh. "We have made it into a nature reserve by painstakingly creating a wildflower meadow as well as planting small copses of trees and shrubs to create habits and a safe haven for wildlife".

The sunken walled garden at the back of the house is an area of more formal garden. This was created as a sheltered sun-trap spot to relax in and also to grow more delicate plants that would need shelter from the sea winds. There is a long pergola along the one side created using antique Victorian cast iron pillars with timbers across to the 9ft high outer wall to support wisteria and other climbing plants such as grape vines. The paving along the pergola is of York stone and decorative mosaics slabs.

Charles, who is passionate about renewable technologies and energy efficiency also wanted to ensure the property had impeccable green credentials. As a result, it has geothermal and solar heating and storage, and benefits from exceptional solar gain. There are also high levels of insulation and there is a ventilation system throughout the property. "This recovers waste heat from the extracted air and puts it back into the house," he adds.

SCENIC BEAUTY

The house is located just a mile from the vibrant and friendly community of Llansteffan with the stunning beach, yacht club and historic castle. There are several superb places to enjoy excellent meals within the village. For outdoor activity there are numerous spectacular coastal and country paths for walks and plenty of potential for horse-riding as well as sailing, fishing and other water related activities. For the younger generation there are clubs for football etc.

Setting the Scene

Gwylfan-y-Glaerwen sits beautifully within its very natural grounds, says Patricia. "We have planted about 500 trees and shrubs, and created a wonderful wildflower meadow, which attracts lots of wildlife," she explains. "We also decided to create a walled garden, where we could grow more exotic plants. This has a sunken garden and a pergola with the Victorian pillars and York stone."
