Property description

A remarkable house, a wonderful setting, and stunning views.

The Edge is situated within the hamlet of Oulton Heath close to the village of Oulton, a small, sought-after Staffordshire village. Located just north of the charming market town of Stone and near to the Trent & Mersey Canal, the village benefits from a popular pub, a village hall and a most attractive parish church dedicated to St John the Evangelist. The thriving canal town of Stone is a short drive and offers an excellent range of local shops, restaurants, and other everyday amenities. There is a regular farmers market and various events take place through the year such as The Stone Festival in June and Stone Food & Drinks Festival in October.

Whilst located amidst quiet rural surroundings, The Edge is very well placed for access to the regional road network. The A34 provides a swift connection to the M6 with junction 15 being just 7 miles distant for northbound journeys to Cheshire and Manchester and junction 14 is also 7 miles away for southbound journeys to Birmingham and the West Midlands. A few miles to the north is the A50 offering the easy link to the M42 and M1. Train services run to London Euston from Stafford with journey times from 1 hour 21 minutes whilst trains to Manchester Piccadilly take just 56 minutes and less than 40 minutes to Birmingham New Street.

There is an excellent range of schooling within the immediate area and a selection of these include Oulton First School, Alleyne's Academy, Christ Church Academy, Yarlet School, Abbotsholme, Denstone College and Stafford Grammar School.

The Edge
The Edge is an extraordinary property in so many ways. The house itself is dramatic and a masterpiece of modern architecture yet the setting, grounds, privacy and vistas are astonishing too. This is indeed the rarest of opportunities to acquire a remarkable home with incomparable design, style, specification and quality.

The creation of The Edge was an inspired collaboration between the current owners and ‘The Cave Architecture’ of Wilmslow who were commissioned to design the house. The building sits perfectly within its surroundings and the captivating geometry of the house changes markedly from all key aspects. The exterior elevations are a wonderful mix of extensive glass curtain walling interspersed with areas of sandstone, Italian tiling and red western cedar with these complimentary materials being used to frame the principal architectural features. The Edge was built in 2013 and protected by a 10 year LABC Warranty.

The interior is dramatic throughout, a showpiece of exceptional design but with an adaptable layout and flow of accommodation to make it the perfect house for family living and for entertaining at almost any scale. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the design theme includes oversized & tall doors and the capacious rooms, flooded with natural light give a wonderful feeling of space throughout. Many of the rooms open directly onto external terraces and balconies, increasing the expansive feel of the accommodation and offering spectacular vantage points for the beautiful views.

"The Edge sits on top of a valley and our brief was to provide unparalleled views from the house. The design, through the use of folded geometry makes the very most of the open aspect whilst providing privacy to the residents. Through the use of natural materials the property sits effortlessly into its surroundings. The use of double height spaces, flowing internal areas and extensive glazing means the house truly lets you become part of the ever changing natural landscape. The eco credentials of the design allows residents to enjoy solar gain throughout the year and alongside renewable installations such as ground source heating reduces the carbon footprint of the building."

Craig Jones, The Cave Architecture

The Accommodation
The extensive interior of The Edge extends to about 5405 sq ft with a carefully conceived and very flexible layout. The entrance to the house at the front features a most impressive door leading into a cedar clad 'pod' creating a vestibule with guest cloakroom off. This leads into the breathtaking atrium of the reception hall where eyes are drawn to the walkways above and the dramatic double height windows. Immediately off the central atrium is a walk-in wine cellar and the staircase hall, with a bespoke walnut & glass staircase having underlighting to a 'floating base'. This hallway leads to the fully equipped home cinema which has two full height sliding doors with access out to perimeter terraces. Adjacent to here is a ground floor bedroom with sliding doors onto a glazed balcony, dressing area with triple wardrobe and ensuite wet room.

The split-level sitting room is a very striking space where two wide flights of steps from the upper snug flank an imposing double aspect sandstone fireplace leading down to the large reception room. There is a high feature ceiling, full length glazed wall and steps leading down to the office/media room. This alluring room could serve a variety of uses, again featuring a high ceiling, glazed wall and sliding doors to garden. There is cloakroom/wc off this room.

Perhaps the most impressive internal space is the large open-plan kitchen/dining/family room, a 600 sq ft living area with glazed walls on two sides and an ingenious, seamless glazed wall panel looking through to the swimming pool. The beautifully fitted main kitchen was designed and completed in August 2020 featuring a large central island, 2 Bosch dishwashers, 2 Smeg ovens, De Dietrich downdraft extractor, tall Bosch Fridge and Liebherr freezer with ice maker. The remainder of the clear-space room can be configured in any way but is designed for a dining area and a glazed sitting area with a spectacular outlook.

An inventive design for this part of the house is the secondary kitchen/utility room. This is designed to provide a catering facility away from the main kitchen area if needed and indeed there is a separate door to outside from here and a connecting door to the swimming pool. Appliances include Bosch oven with warming drawer, further Bosch oven/microwave and 2 Bosch fridges.

The beautifully positioned indoor swimming pool has a long, fully glazed wall on the west side providing a dramatic feeling of space and lovely views over the main garden areas with the floor to ceiling lift/slide doors opening to broad sun terraces. The heated pool features a counter current Fluovo swim jet system and Heatsavr liquid pool blanket. Off the pool room is a wet room design changing/shower room and there is a useful connecting door to the secondary kitchen. The plant room houses a Calorex pool heater and air handling system, the ground source heat pump boiler and MVHR unit.

The glazed gallery landing areas at the heart of the first floor look down to the hall beneath and huge windows front and rear provide views over the courtyard and the extensive grounds to the rear and hills beyond. A suspended walkway with glass balustrading leads into the luxurious master suite. The principal bedroom has full height glazed walls on two sides with lift/slide doors to an extensive roof terrace with south, west and northerly aspects. The bedroom opens into an exquisite ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and a freestanding bath set in the perfect position for an amazing view whilst bathing. The master suite is completed by a bespoke dressing room completed in 2020.

There are three further good-sized bedrooms at first floor level, all with ensuite facilities and bespoke wardrobes/storage solutions. All the rooms have fine views and bedroom two has a most attractive perimeter balcony.

The Edge will be sold with extensive documentation covering the design/construction project, instruction manuals and warranties. Some highlights of the high specification of the house are summarised below.

Gardens and grounds
The Edge is approached through an impressive entrance that offers privacy and security. Tall laurel hedges and silver birch trees flank pillars clad in tiles to match the house whilst a sliding electric gate with intercom system opens to a most impressive visitor courtyard. This resin bound gravel courtyard provides the perfect approach to the front of the house, offers extensive parking and access to the cedar and tile clad double garage.

Double doors in the tall courtyard wall open to the ornamental garden on the south side where areas of gravel are interspersed with bamboo, grasses and shrubs. This leads seamlessly onto the expansive west facing tiled terraces that run out from the swimming pool and family room and then continue around the rear of the house, leading down to the sitting room/office wing. Leading away from the beautiful terraces are extensive lawns, mainly open at the rear to prevent interrupting the wonderful views.

To the west, the gardens comprise expansive lawns interspersed with ornamental trees and leading out to mature borders carefully planted with a delightful mix of herbaceous plants, shrubs, grasses and closely clipped box. Seating and alfresco dining areas are carefully positioned in secluded settings within the garden. To the north the lawns drop away to extensive grassland extending out to mature boundaries planted with traditional hedgerows and a wide variety of young and mature indigenous trees. The lower pasture area could easily be utilised for grazing and a separate vehicular access exists to the grounds for maintenance or possible future access to stabling.

Should a purchaser wish to create a garden of greater complexity, a landscaping scheme was commissioned in 2020 by Blackwells Garden Design and two outstanding designs were completed and are available to consider.
