Gresham House is a gracious Georgian home in the market town of Chatteris. The present owners, Giles and Emly immediately loved the large square, well-proportioned rooms, high ceilings and the period style that blended seamlessly with the requirements of modern living. They also sensed its friendly and welcoming ambience, and knew it was going to be the perfect family home.

Emly explains that as she and Giles were working, the location was also an important element in their search. She knew the pleasant and community minded Chatteris had easy access to Huntingdon, Peterborough and Ely stations, which all had fast and regular services to London and the North. The children were able to walk to their primary school and there is a secondary school in town plus the public school, Kings Ely, which can be reached by bus.

The House provides a charming lifestyle. The ground floor spaces have a seamless flow for family relaxation and entertaining. The front sitting room with its elegant Georgian sash window and nineteen thirties Tudor revival stone fireplace is a serene room. Giles says they love it for morning coffee when it is flooded with sunlight: and in winter, with a blazing fire it is a cosy retreat. It is an impressive entertaining room. And with doors to the rear sitting room open, you can create a large sociable space when required. Normally the rear is a family ‘flop room,’ where you simply enjoy down time in most pleasing surroundings.

The kitchen is a similar delightful area. It is a daily hub for family meals, with views into the garden, where you can watch the chickens contentedly wandering. For Emly the wow factor is the large walk in pantry. In a house where up to fifteen are staying for Christmas it is ideal for storage and overflow food. She says it is functional, but with its original Victorian tiled floor, also very pretty.

The double bedrooms over three floors enable easy overnight hospitality. During lockdown the dormer rooms have adapted as offices for working from home. It has been most convenient to close the door at the end of the day, isolate the area, and go down to the house and garden.

The children have loved growing up in Gresham House and garden. There are innumerable areas for games, with hide and seek, a great favourite. The quiet walled garden has been much enjoyed for summer living. Settle under the pear tree for dappled afternoon shade or enjoy relaxing in the calm of the kitchen garden. The double storey outbuilding is a sometime gym, office and dumping ground but is ideal for development.

The family are sad to leave but take away many very happy memories of their twelve years in Gresham House. It is a very special home, and it has always been wonderful to return to its tranquillity at the end of a busy day.

Local Information

Chatteris is a small market town on the western border of the Isle of Ely, about 9 miles south of March and 12 miles north-west of Ely. It has an array of shops, dentists, doctors’ surgeries and several public houses, restaurants and tea rooms.

There are two primary schools which are currently rated 'good' by Ofsted within a four-mile radius, and the Cromwell Community College, which also has a 'good' Ofsted rating is within half a mile.
The Old Railway Line Footpath and Bridleway which runs from Chatteris to Somersham is an ideal way to access the countryside and leads to a new park with wildlife areas for all the family to enjoy.

Transport

Chatteris is located just twelve miles from the cathedral city of Ely which offers rail links into London, Cambridge and Peterborough. It is also well served by local bus routes, with regular buses to the nearby towns of March, St Ives, Ely and the city of Cambridge. The nearest railway stations are in March and Manea.
