LEISURE & PLEASURE
It was approximately 20 years ago that Kevin and Lesley first viewed the property in Long Bennington. Since then, it has been completed transformed. “We worked on it over the course of about 10 years: creating the annexes and the office block, and modernising the main house at the same time,” he says. “We have been through every part of the house, upgrading and improving it; we replaced all the windows and had a bespoke kitchen with granite work surfaces fitted. We also created the games room and bar – and even had the bar plumbed in for barrels of beer!” He adds: “Everything here has been completed to a very high standard to ensure it has been a wonderful family home and a great place to entertain.”
SUPERB SPACE
The magnificent main house is entered via a lobby and then reception hall, which leads to a ground floor shower room and all the main living accommodation. These stylish spaces include the stunning kitchen breakfast room, as well as the dining room and formal drawing room, which has an elegant stone fireplace and beautiful beams. “Having all this space has given us lots of flexibility,” he says. “These rooms can be arranged to suit different needs.” From the drawing room there is access through to the outstanding games room, where the current owners have a snooker table and the bar. “This is my favourite part of the house and is one area I will certainly replicate wherever we move to,” he admits.
IN THE SWIM
French windows from the games room open on to the garden and the swimming pool area, with its high vaulted ceiling, skylights and doors on to the garden. Here there is a wet room, changing rooms and space to sit around the water’s edge. “Our son and two daughters loved having the pool when they were growing up and now our grandchildren enjoy it – we keep it at between 85 and 90 deg so it is always lovely and warm.” All six bedrooms are situated upstairs, together with the family bathroom. “The master bedroom and one of the guest rooms both have en suite facilities and doors opening on to a balcony.”
ROOM FOR EVERYONE
The two annexes are completely self-contained and would be perfect for extended family or older children to live in – or even as guest or holiday accommodation. One has an integral double garage, utility room, cloakroom and large, barn-style living area, complete with sitting room, dining area and kitchen at ground floor level. Stairs lead up to a mezzanine level, double bedroom, shower room and en suite dressing room. The other annexe has two bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area and a shower room. “My parents have lived in one of the annexes, which has been ideal,” he suggests. “The accommodation here is very versatile. New owners could even choose to live in one of the annexes themselves and let out the main house.”
FAMILY TIMES
The property has been designed in a U-shape around a central garden, where children can play, and adults can relax in the sunshine. There is a park close by, which the children have also enjoyed, and three pubs within walking distance. “This is a lovely village, with a very friendly community,” he observes. “It is also a very easy place to travel from. It is quick to pick up the A1 if you need to travel by road and it only takes 10 to 12 minutes to get to Grantham station if you want to catch a train. We can also get into either Newark or Grantham easily to go shopping.” The family will miss their impressive home when they leave, he agrees. “It has been a great place to live – perfect for us in every way.”
Setting the Scene
Ivy Cottage is set in enclosed grounds, offering generous parking, garaging and space for children to play out. There are terraces for outside dining and entertaining. The grounds include two annexes, an office and a workshop.
