Baysham Court occupies a wonderful, distinctly rural location on the fringes of the dispersed hamlet of Sellack, some 4 miles north west of the market and tourist town of Ross-on-Wye. The whole of the surrounding environs lies within the Wye Valley of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The principal aspects to the house are to the sunny south east and south west, the former enabling far reaching views across adjacent farmland towards Ross-on-Wye and May Hill. For those concerned with strategic location and accessibility, the M50 motorway/A40 dual carriageway is accessible within 5 minutes drive, whilst Hereford, Monmouth and Ledbury are all within easy striking distance.
The settlement of Baysham (Baissan) featured in the Domesday Book of 1086, the first record of a Baysham Court appearing in some deeds in 1201. Throughout most of its history, Baysham Court was a small estate with about 200 acres of surrounding farmland and cottages, the Scudamore family having been linked to the property for many years. More recently, the property was acquired in 1846 by Sir Thomas Duckham MP, who founded the world reknowned Hereford Herd Book Society. More recently, the property was sold to the Rudge’s, farmers who still farm close by. Later occupants included Dame Hilda Rose, and Lady Keon Boyd. The family of the current vendors then acquired the property in 1970, since when they have spent over 50 happy years here. The property is now being offered for sale only because the whole of the family have flown the nest, and the owners wish to downsize!
The extensive five reception, six bedroom accommodation displays many appealing architectural features. These include shuttered windows to the main reception rooms, wood panelled walls to much of the ground floor, and some beautifully ornate ceilings with intricate plasterwork, including coats of arms. All principal rooms are of generous proportions, the accommodation in total extending to over 5,000 sq.ft. Most of the main rooms command far reaching views towards picturesque Ross-on-Wye, and there is a wonderful rural ambience, with the extensive grounds completely encircling the house. The accompanying floor plan details both the layout and room dimensions.
