Designed by the famous architect Edward Ould in the late 1800s, there are only a few examples left of his work around the country. Most notably for those locally, is the former residence of Bidston Court which was relocated to Frankby and now known as the Hillbark Hotel. Wightwick Manor in Wolverhampton being another, although this has been formally adopted by the National Trust, showing the calibre of the property in question.
Built with grandeur and family living in mind, there is very little that can be put into words that could truly describe this residence! On approach there is a driveway which gives you the first glimpse of the gable end of the property at which point you start to grasp the magnitude and size. The curved stone porch with original quarry tiled floor leads through the original front door.
The welcoming entrance hallway with its stunning wooden panelling carries on throughout the property and particularly to the ground floor. The open and flowing staircase on your right leads to the upper level passing an original stone framed window. However, firstly there is the dining room, with its stunning bay windows overlooking the gardens, having original window seat. The wooden panelling continues around the feature hearth and beautifully maintained Inglenook fireplace surrounded with character detail. All of the fireplaces are still in working order and not only produce an exceptional amount of heat but also creates a cosy warm atmosphere, ideal for all the family during the cold winter months.
Vestibule leads into the drawing room, with further door leading out to the rear of the house via the covered Quarry tiled seating area. This is an ideal place to relax on Summer evenings. The drawing room shares the magnificent bay window that overlooks the garden and like the dining room features a further Inglenook fireplace with Ornate copper panelling, clearly created by a Master of his Trade. Another doorway leads off the back of this room to the cloaks area, which can also be accessed via double doors off the hallway.
At the other end of the house sits the lounge, the third of the magnificent bays which offers stunning views across the gardens, providing natural light which heightens the amazing ceiling moulding. This has been showcased in our photographs. We finish off the ground floor accommodation in the kitchen which has been transformed over the years but provides a cosy place for the chef of the house.
The first-floor mimics the general layout of the ground floor with both the master bedroom and second bedroom enjoying the curved bays overlooking the gardens. The master bedroom sits centrally over the dining room with another of the beautiful open fireplaces sunk into the main wall. Intricately designed storage cupboards and access to the en-suite bathroom which has a Victorian era toilet & cast iron bath ... something you truly don’t see every day, this is hidden behind the panelling in the room. The second bedroom sits on the other side of the bathroom above the drawing room, not only sharing the bay but the Inglenook recess of downstairs.
At the other end of the hallway is large third bedroom, with a box bay overlooking the gardens and the fourth bedroom/study with its clever concealed cupboards. A further bathroom, more recently modernised service these rooms. Above the hallway and porch is the beautiful foyer that provides a light & airy reading space, ideal for relaxing in front of the curved bay window.
The generous spaces don’t stop here……..with three more generous bedrooms spanning across the top of the house. The largest of which sits at the gable end. A handy eaves space is a fun space for the kids to enjoy creating their very own dens.
Further to this is the basement room, which takes up around a third of the far end of the house under the drawing room. With the same fireplace recess and high-level window, this space is currently utilised as storage but could provide another living space or separate apartment if required as it has its own entrance.
As you can see form the plan we have provided, the house sits on a substantial plot, which, while currently taken up with mature plants, trees and shrubs provides a significant opportunity for transformation. At the rear of the house is a sizeable patio with steps down into the garden itself and an expanse of driveway to the side.
