Description

Tucked away on the edge of the peaceful hamlet of Chittoe Heath near Bromham, the Methodist Chapel is a beautifully converted former chapel dating back to 1882, with a later extension added in 1914 as the original Sunday School.

Thoughtfully transformed into a two-bedroom home following a successful change-of-use application in 2017, the property blends historic character with simple, contemporary living. Original features including exposed beams, chapel windows, wooden flooring and reclaimed materials have been carefully retained throughout. ‘We wanted to be sensitive to the building and preserve its simplicity and character,’ explain the owners. They add, ‘It’s quirky, unconventional and completely different to anywhere else we’d lived before – that’s what first drew us to the property.’

Originally gifted to the Methodist church by Major J.W.G. Spicer of the Sype Park estate, the chapel occupies a fascinating position in local history. ‘The original chapel was further into Chittoe and considered too close to the Church as they disturbed each other’s services, so the major built the Methodists a new chapel.’

Surrounded by woodland and open agricultural fields, the setting feels wonderfully private and immersed in nature. ‘It’s incredibly peaceful here with wildlife all around us, from many varieties of birds to nesting hedgehogs,’ say the owners.

The accommodation includes a kitchen/diner, reception room, office/potential third bedroom and porch on the ground floor, with two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, alongside a separate workshop and wood store. Large original chapel windows flood the living space with natural light and frame far-reaching sky views. ‘The living room is especially beautiful – the full-height windows make the space feel so light and open,’ the owners add.
Entertaining has been a highlight both inside and out, with the surrounding darkness also making the property ideal for stargazing. ‘With so little light pollution, we’ve loved watching the night skies,’ they explain. Despite its tranquil setting, the chapel remains well connected, with Bromham village amenities, welcoming pubs and transport links all close at hand, alongside easy access to nearby market towns and historic Lacock.

‘It’s such a peaceful setting, surrounded by countryside and wildlife, yet still close to everything we need.’

‘We loved taking on a project that felt unique and bringing new life back into the chapel.’

‘The original chapel windows and wooden floors give the house so much character and warmth.’

‘We’ll really miss the quiet evenings here and the incredible star-filled skies.’
