The original half-timbered house was then extended sympathetically in 1908 to support the growing family and adding larger more congenial rooms such as the kitchen/breakfast room and large bedroom.
The present owners have lived here since 1969 and have in turn added their own mark to the house with the erection of the Coach House and garaging in 2005 and continued to enhance the garden and grounds – a wonderful feature of this property.
The house still displays many of the original features of the Arts & Crafts movement including bespoke woodwork features throughout, open fire and local stone and tile exteriors.
Whilst the house could benefit from modernisation it has good sized rooms, many with double or triple aspect and all the principal rooms enjoy a delightful view over the well maintained gardens.
Constructed in 2005 the detached Coach House was designed in keeping with the main house down to the finest of detail, such as the locally sourced matched tiling. It was designed as a multi-functional space for garaging (all three have electric doors) and entertaining with fine views over the gardens. To the rear and independently accessed are three interlinked reception rooms, previously used for social gatherings, they would make a great office, gym or artist studio and could be converted into accommodation (subject to planning). The Coach House top floor has two large rooms that offer versatile use for business, leisure and storage.
This beautiful house is beholden to its magical gardens. Completely private the house overlooks its grounds which total some 2.13 acres (8,611 sq m). Originally laid out when the house was built and still showing some of the original structure such as the early 20th century rose garden, the gardens have been a labour of love in the interim years. The owners defined certain zones offering year round floral colour and interest. These include native Snakes head fritillaries in springtime, wild flower beds for bees, roses and mature border planting. Wrapped around the inner gardens is mature woodland of wild cherry, larch, beech, silver birch, holly, oak and other specimen trees.
There is a well-stocked and productive vegetable garden with fruit trees and large lawned area ideal for family life. To the rear of the grounds you will find the working area with 7 large sheds, compost areas and the beginnings of the woodland walk.
Situated a short walk (0.4miles) from the village centre of Winscombe, which offers a range of local shops, dentists and local businesses, bowls club and a local pub.
There is a choice of local schools including the highly regarded co-ed independent Sidcot School. Many local families find this heart of the Mendips area appealing with convenient access via A38 in Bristol direction, A368 to Bath and Strawberry Valley cycleway to Yatton through the famous Thatchers Cider orchards. There is also Wells, with its Cathedral School only 13.4 miles away.
Entrance hall, Drawing room, Dining room, Study, Family kitchen/breakfast room, utility room, Cloakroom, Sitting room, WC, 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, separate WC, generous top floor attic rooms.
Main driveway with ample parking and access to Coach House and garaging. 2 further driveways. Spectacular formal gardens with various well laid out ‘zones’ and an abundance of mature year round foliage. Vegetable garden, mature woodland, large lawned area, discrete working area with various sheds.
