The Location - The village of Hopton is set on the edge of the Peak District National Park in an area of delightful countryside including Carsington Reservoir with its fishing and water sports. The village combined with Carsington has the benefit of a primary school and village inn and is within easy travelling distance of local centres including Wirksworth (2 miles), Matlock (6 miles), the famous market town of Ashbourne (7 miles) and the City of Derby (12 miles). Derby City's outer ring road provides swift onward connection with other principal trunk roads, east and west midland centres and junction 28 of the M1 motorway lies approximately 14 miles away. The A50 dual carriageway is situated some 8 miles south of Ashbourne and provides onward travel again to the east midlands and East Midlands International Airport and Stoke on Trent and the M6 motorway to the west.

A Brief History - There were buildings on the site of the current house in at least the 17th century and probably earlier. The 'Barn’ and outhouses are older than ‘The Goth House’. ‘The Barn’ may originally have been built for spinning or weaving possibly using hemp. Hemp was used for clothes, sacking and ropes, which were used in the many lead mines of the area. ‘The Goth House’ was built in the late 18th century when hydro-therapy (the basis of the growth of Matlock Bath and Smedley’s Hydro in Matlock) was fashionable. The Gells, in common with many owners of country houses, decided to build their own bath house. Often these bath houses were elaborate affairs and Wood Bank is similar in style to John Sneyd’s in Staffordshire. It was also fashionable to build fancy houses on the edge of an estate. Exactly how the bath house was intended to function is not clear. Possibly the front room with the Gothic tracery windows was the bath and the back room the changing area. The out-house has a thrall, oven and large basin which could have been used to heat the water.

By the mid-19th century the Twigg family, carpenters, lived there as tenants of the Gells until, along with a great deal of the estate, the house was sold to George Key, of Cromford, proprietor of Golconda Mine on Manystones Lane, in about 1920. The Key’s gamekeepers lived here from around the 1930's. By the 1950's the residents of Wood Bank were senior staff from Golconda. It was sold in the 1990s and modernised in 1999.
