Records show that there has been a pub on the site since 1740 but it is thought there was considerable rebuilding around 1825. The main building is brick and flint with part tiled elevation under a clay tile roof. Extended and altered over the years. The Red Lion has an interesting claim to fame, Ian Fleming the creator of James Bond was a resident of St Margaret's Bay in the 1950's and early 1960's. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also based in and around St Margaret's with the Old Windmill on the cliffe top and the infamous Goodwin Sands featuring in the original book
