Full description

A substantial house forming the major part of a Victorian mansion with superb and impressive rooms.

The architect of the Midland Hotel at St Pancras, Sir George Gilbert Scott, designed five Somerset rectories in addition to Glen House which is believed to have been built in about 1840. The house has many of the architectural characteristics typical of the mid 19th century' well proportioned, good sized main rooms with excellent ceiling heights, cornicing, wainscoting and good quality joinery.

Situated on the western fringe of the village, tucked away from all the main roads and adjoining unspoilt farmland, over which there are extensive views, this is a house for those who rate quality of construction as an important attribute in their list of what constitutes the ideal house.

SITUATION This part of south Somerset is rightly regarded as some of the finest in the south west, as the undulating hills and valleys give way to the wilder, and more dramatic scenery of west Dorset to the south. Merriott is a relatively large village situated about 2 miles north of Crewkerne which has a good range of everyday facilities including a Waitrose Supermarket and a first class butcher. The village lies on the river Parrett and there were at one time three water mills and a factory which for more than a century produced sail cloth, including the sails for Nelsons 'Victory'.

To the north of the village lies All Saints church with its Norman tower. There are two very good public houses, the Kings Head and the Swan. Other local amenities include a number of stores, post office, village school, garden centre, squash club, recreation grounds and local bus service. Communications to the area are excellent, the A303 lies about 4 miles to the north and is predominately dual carriageway to the M3, London to the east and Exeter to the west. Junction 25 of M5 is within easy reach at Taunton and rail connections are available at Crewkerne (Exeter to Waterloo line) or Taunton (Penzance to Paddington).

- A303 4 miles
- Yeovil 10 miles
- Crewkerne 2 miles
- Sherborne and the Dorset Coast about 15 miles
- Taunton (M5) about 20 miles
