The Mansion was built in 1864, incorporating part of an original house dating from 1728. The interior, including the staircase and gallery, was re-modelled in 1920-21 by 'Trollope and Colls' whilst in the ownership of Lord Kylsant. The property was used as an orphanage and children's home from 1940 before being purchased by the Leonard Cheshire Charity for use as a residential nursing/care home until 2009. The Mansion comprises a Grade II Listed building, built in the Victorian Gothic style with original features intact, such as marble fireplaces, oak panelling, ornate plaster ceilings, a central lantern topped staircase hall, stone floors, carved columns, vaulted cellars, a tower and an octagonal billiard room. The building is constructed of limestone and rock faced squared rubble stone, sandstone lintels and sills, limestone arched doorways and mullions, under a slate roof with stone corbels to iron gutters. The Mansion is situated on a site extending to approximately 0.93 hectares (2.3 acres).
