Chapel House is appropriately located at the harbour-end of Chapel Street, one of Cornwall's oldest and prettiest Georgian streets, home to historic pubs and colourful galleries.

The ancient market town of Penzance with its notable Georgian and Regency architecture, forms a gateway to the Land's End Peninsula and is set in the corner of Mount's Bay, home to the spectacular and historic St. Michael's Mount. Lying in a sheltered position, Penzance enjoys one of the most temperate climates of the British Isles. The mild weather conditions allows numerous sub-tropical plants and palm trees to thrive.

Penzance has an attractive promenade on its sea front between the inner harbour and Newlyn and provides a host of retail, leisure and commercial facilities along with a number of museums and galleries.

Communications to the far west of Cornwall have improved considerably recently with the new section of dual carriageway on the A30 at Bodmin along with regular flights to Newquay airport from several major cities in the UK. Penzance is easily reached by rail, lying at the end of the mainline from London Paddington. There also is a regular helicopter service and passenger ferry from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly.

The coastline in this part of Cornwall is nothing less than magnificent, and indeed the famous Minack Theatre is to be found a little further to the west, perched high above the granite cliffs with the western approaches as it's backdrop. Indeed, dotted along the coastline westwards there are a number of wonderful beaches below the south west coastal footpath including Sennen Cove about 8 miles away, now renowned for its surfing break. The popular resort of St. Ives, home to the Tate St. Ives and the Barbara Hepworth museum, is about 8 miles away on the north coast.

Believed to have been built as the Portuguese Embassy in 1780, Chapel House is a classic example of elegant Georgian architecture, and occupies a commanding position at the end of Chapel Street elevated above the harbour and with views across the bay towards St.Michael's Mount.

This substantial and imposing four storey property is entered via a large reception hall, currently arranged as the Foyer Gallery. This leads to a large staircase and also to the bar-lounge, believed to have once been the state rooms of the Portuguese Embassy.

The upper two floors accommodate 7 letting bedrooms and a house-keeper's apartment, with most of the rooms enjoying views over Mount's Bay taking in St. Michael's Mount.

At the front of the building there is a large walled terrace garden and under this a garage also included in the sale.

Please refer to the floorplans to see the full layout.

In recent years, Chapel House has been home to the Penzance Arts Club. Founded in June 1994 by the textile designer Belinda Rushworth-Lund, and subsequently featured in Herbert Ypma's eponymous Hip Hotels series, The Penzance Arts Club was a stylish and well respected part of the artistic and social establishment of west Cornwall.

As a small boutique hotel, Chapel House attracted people from far and wide and has over the years been frequented by many celebrities, also having had reciprocal arrangements with several other clubs worldwide including the Groucho Club in London.

On the lower ground floor there is a restaurant premises with kitchen, wine cellar, store rooms and access to a useful rear courtyard. This lower ground floor has separate access from Chapel Street besides the rear stairway from the reception hall in Chapel House itself.

After leaving the main A30 follow the main road into Penzance town centre. At the top of the main street, turn left and then continue left into Chapel Street. Chapel House & The Penzance Arts Club is at the bottom of the street on the left hand side.
