Full description

Tenure: Freehold

A beautifully presented and laid out family house with the fine detail and history of the 18th century combined with 21st century living. The grounds extend to a little over 6 acres and include a one bedroomed cottage

Skellater was completely gutted prior to the 1975 restoration by builder Alastair Harper and in 2004 the latest changes occurred. Under the guidance of Architect Michael Rasmussen, Aboyne contractor Mike Forbes built a superb kitchen link for which he was presented with the Federation of Master Builders Craftsmanship Award. At the same time the interior was re-worked by Mikhail Pietranek of Ballater. Local craftsman were employed to add new fireplaces to the dining room, drawing room, hall and bedroom, to add cornices, and change architraves and all was done under a Historic Scotland Category A Listing.

The approach to Skellater is imposing with a long, straight drive rising gently to a circular sweep at the front.
The house is sited to look down its drive, over Srathdon with the River at the bottom. At the top of the drive is a stepped terrace with deep grass borders and flagged approach to the front door.

The accommodation includes hall, drawing room, sitting room/dining room, kitchen/ dining room, cloakroom, office, utility room, games room, double garage and workshop. 5 bedrooms, bathroom, shower room.

The garden to the rear and both sides of the house is framed by dry stone walling, and divided by maturing shrubs and specimen trees whilst tucked behind a hedge is a productive kitchen garden. Beyond this is an area of sheltered woodland.

Skellater cottage is a great additional asset providing detached annexe accommodation or holiday let with income.

Strathdon 4 miles. Braemar 22 miles, Aberdeen 48 miles.

Skellater House lies on the upper slopes of the north side of Strathdon high up above the River Don in an area renowned for its beautiful scenery.

It is also very accessible for a highland location being only about 48 miles from Aberdeen and its International Airport and only 22 miles from Braemar. Locally it is well supported by general store and post office in Bellabeg (5miles) which also has a good primary school.
Alford (21 miles) has a greater range of shops and of course Aberdeen has everything you would expect from a major regional city.

The surrounding area is famous for its hills and mountains and in particular for its Highland Estates where some of the best field sports are available. These include Roe and Red deer stalking, walked up or driven grouse, pheasant and partridge shooting and salmon and sea trout fishing on two of the best rivers in Europe; the Rivers Don and Dee.
