Historical Note

Gayton Hall is well recorded and has been long associated with the Glegg family as was the township of Gayton for almost 600 years. Originally a timber framed building, the existing property is believed to have been constructed during the mid-17th century which is consistent with the date of 1663 carved in the stone lintel over the doorway to the dovecote in the grounds of Gayton Hall bearing the initials GEK being those of Edward Glegg and his wife Katherine Delves of Doddington.

William of Orange stayed at Gayton Hall in 1690 whilst his army and fleet gathered in preparation to set sail for the Battle of the Boyne.

The Gleggs have mention in the War of the Roses (1436-1485) and during the English Civil War (1640-1651) William Glegg, in his evidence to the Court of Sequestrator for Wirral in 1649, tells how he was seized at Gayton Hall by a troop, taken to Chester and confined in the castle.
