By prior appointment with Bradleys Buckfastleigh on 01364 642642.
Buckfastleigh came into its own in the 11th Century when King Canute (the King that tried to order the sea to retreat - unsuccessfully) established the Benedictine Abbey in 1018. During the Industrial Revolution it transformed from a sleepy market town filled with pilgrims to a hive of activity driven by woollen, paper and corn mills. One can see the original medieval layout of the old town today. Located within the boundaries of Dartmoor National Park, the town is within a short drive of the Dartmoor attractions and additionally within a convenient distance of the historic Elizabethan market town of Totnes and the English Riviera Resorts. Most visitors to Buckfastleigh head for the Abbey and its famous Tonic Wine but other local attractions include the Pennywell Farm and Wildlife Centre and the South Devon Steam Railway.
