Description

The Property

Swallows Court at Moreton Valance is a unique 17th century, grade II listed, house in the Cotswolds.

The property consists of the main house built of ashlar Cotswold stone with six double bedrooms, landscaped gardens, a traditional courtyard, plus a versatile range of stables and outbuildings. A former cider barn has now been developed into two very attractive, self-contained cottages with exposed beams and en-suites. The cottages could be ideal for dependents, guest accommodation or to generate additional income.

Swallows Court has Jacobean, Tudor and Georgian features and a fascinating history. It was built in the seventeenth century using the ashlar Cotswold stone from the castle that was originally built next to the church at Moreton Valence. In 1273 the king gave William de Valence ten oaks from the Forest of Dean to build the castle and the construction of a moat to defend it. The moat still exists just behind the church. The castle on the mound within the moat was built of the same ashlar stone as the adjoining church and the artist’s impression in the photographs shows what it may have looked like. Recent research shows that the mason’s marks found on the stones in the cellar at Swallows Court are identical with the masons’ marks on the ashlar stones at the rear of the church which confirms that they all date back to the thirteenth century when the church and the castle were originally built. It is thought that the Tudor fireplace in the dining room and the carved Jacobean Stair Post also came from the castle.
