A most imposing and attractive house, with established gardens

Location

The White House is situated in the village of Hillside, which is a quiet and desirable residential area, but with easy and quick access to Montrose.

Hillside lies immediately to the north of Montrose and Montrose Basin, just off the A937 which connects north to Laurencekirk. Hillside provides local amenities including a village shop with post office, hotel and Rosemount Primary School. More extensive shopping together with banks, secondary schooling and a swimming pool and leisure centre are found in Montrose, which also has a railway station with regular services to Aberdeen and to the south, including a sleeper. In addition there is a railway station at Laurencekirk which also has a range of shopping and further secondary education at the Mearns Academy. Private schooling is available locally at Lathallan.

The A90 provides easy access to both Dundee and Aberdeen, which provide all the services expected of major cities. The A92 coast road runs south from Stonehaven to Dundee via Montrose and Arbroath. The journey time to Aberdeen airport which has a range of domestic and European flights, is soon to be reduced with the opening of the Western Peripheral route. There are flights from Dundee to London Stansted.

There are popular beaches at Montrose, Lunan Bay and St Cyrus Nature Reserve. Away from the coast lie the Angus Glens. Fishing can be taken on the North and South Esk rivers, while local golf courses include Montrose, Brechin and Edzell. Montrose Basin, which lies just to the south of Hillside is another Nature Reserve which is renowned for its wide variety of migrating bird life, tidal changes and spectacular sunsets. There are fine walks in the nearby Rosemount Estate is only yards away.

Description

The White House is a most attractive and interesting house. The earlier parts of the house predate the 1820s when there was a cottage on the site. Between the 1820s and the 1840s the front was added and the house was later extended to the rear and then upstairs in the 1930s. It had been the Dower House for the Rosemount Estate and the house was originally known as Bellevue because of its position. The house still retains much of its original character along with period features including cornicings and fireplaces. The house faces south over its own lovely and secluded gardens. From the first floor there are views to Montrose Basin.

The conservatory was added in 1990 and at about the same time the kitchen and breakfast room were fully refurbished, and the garage was built. These works have been done in such a way that they are in keeping with the character of the house. As such it is an imposing property with impressive reception room. The entrance hall is most striking, with an oval cupola.

Stone gate piers open onto a tarred drive which leads to a gravelled parking and turning sweep at the front of the house, and which also continues in a circle around the back of the house.

Steps lead up to a wooden front door with glazed side and overlights and which opens to an entrance vestibule with cornice and tiled floor. An inner partially glazed door leads into the impressive hall which has an oval cupola, cornice, walk in store with fitted storage units, and a walk in cupboard again with storage units. Off this is the drawing room which has cornicings, a bay window looking out onto the garden, an open fireplace with marble mantel and two wall lights. Opposite is the sitting room which also has cornicings, bay window, fireplace with marble mantel and gas fire, wall light, fitted bookshelves and a shelved cupboard. Bedroom 1 has a cornice, window shutters, hanging cupboard, further shelved and hanging cupboard and a fireplace with marble mantel. The WC has a washbasin. Bedroom 2, which is currently used as an office, also has a cornice, together with a mantel, window shutters and an interconnecting door through to bedroom 3.

Behind is an inner hallway with a walk in shelved cupboard. Bedroom 3 has a cornice, cupboard, window shutters, and mantel. Adjacent is a dressing room which has fitted hanging and shelved cupboards, and an en suite shower room with wet walling, washbasin and WC. Also accessed from the inner hallway is the bow fronted dining room. This too has cornicings, bay window, three wall lights, fireplace with mantel and gas fire. The butler’s pantry links through to the kitchen and has fitted shelves, wall and floor cupboards and a sink. The impressive breakfasting kitchen has fitted wall and floor units incorporating a Jackson Canterbury double oven / grill, Creda four ring gas hob with extractor, Homark oven / grill, sink, Bosch dishwasher together with an island unit. An arch leads through to the breakfast room which has further fitted cupboards and which links to the double glazed conservatory. This has a tiled floor and doors to the garden, together with automatic, thermostatic and electric roof vents. Also off the kitchen is a lobby with a back door, and a playroom with window shutters. This links through to a store room with mantel and to the utility room housing a Worcester boiler, plumbing for washing machine, sink, clothes pulley and door to walk in store.

Stairs from the oval hall lead to the first floor landing with three cupboards, one housing a sink. Bedroom 4 has a cornice, fireplace with mantel and en suite bathroom with pedestal washbasin, WC and door to the landing. Also accessed from the landing is a dressing room / box room and Bedroom 5 which also has a cornice, together with an original fireplace with mantel and a fitted hanging cupboard.

The gardens at The White House are lovely. Within them are a number of fine trees including two Himalayan cedars, a Wellingtonia, a Lawson cypress and maples. As such the gardens are private and sheltered. In addition there are rhododendrons, shrub and flower borders, and a wooden summer house. Adjacent to the conservatory are paved areas which are ideal for both seating and entertaining. There is a covered entrance at the back door and also accessed from the outside is a boiler room, housing a wall mounted Worcester boiler. At the entrance there is a garage block. This is harled with a slate roof and has a double garage with an automatic up and over door, and a single garage also with an up and over door. Attached is a lean to greenhouse. Part of the garage block is accessed from the rear by the neighbouring property.
