About the Property
Castle Cote is a unique four bedroom detached character home that is believed to have been designed and built by William Marjoram in 1895 with later additions. The property offers a number of very distinctive features to include arched topped windows, turrets and castellations similar to a castle. The house is set back from Bredfield Road and enjoys good access to the railway station, River Deben and the shops and facilities within Woodbridge.
Arranged over two floors the accommodation comprises: open fronted porch, hall, WC, sitting room, snug, bathroom and kitchen/breakfast room with walk-in larder. A carpeted staircase with storage cupboard beneath rises to the first floor landing providing access to a further WC, three double bedrooms and a single bedroom/study with built-in storage. The main bedroom is located to the rear of the property and benefits from an en-suite wet room style shower room with WC. The sitting room and snug offer feature fireplaces with inset multi fuel stoves and sash windows. The turrets provide recesses within the reception rooms and built-in cupboards within the second and third bedrooms. Outside, there is ample off road parking to the front of the property with vehicular access to the side leading to the rear garden and a red brick single garage that has a tiled roof. The enclosed rear garden is predominantly laid to grass and can be approached by a pedestrian gate to one side and the gated vehicular access to the other. There is a shed, former ornamental pond and what is believed to be a remarkably well preserved and very unusual 1st World War Air-raid Shelter with flint knapp outhouse style entrance and a spiral staircase descending to the air raid shelter beneath.
Castle Cote featured within a book by Robert Blake (1994) "Melton - a changing village" and William Marjoram (1849-1935) is described as "A Builder of Quality" and a character of note. William Marjoram designed numbers 10, 12 & 14 Bredfield Road in addition to his home Castle Cote (number 8) where spent his declining years with his wife. William Marjoram is reported to have built the air-raid shelter (also described as a folly) for his family in 1917 following a Zeppelin air-raid in 1915. Robert Blake described the spiral staircase that leads down to a circular chamber that has beautifully decorated walls covered with engraved texts and extracts from the Old Testament.
