Red Chimneys is approached from Shepherds Lane through wrought iron gates, and has a right of way, passing a neighbouring property, to the private pillared and gated entranceway. This driveway has been recently resurfaced (resin bound with brick edging) and sweeps down to the property, passing a brick paviered parking area and the studio. Interestingly, there are several refurbished lamposts which were originally the gas lamps from Exmouth Seafront.
The formal gardens principally lie to the south and have a huge amount of maturity, offering great privacy, yet with an open aspect and some stunning far-reaching views to the north. They are laid to large areas of level lawn which are interspersed with a great variety of trees and well-established borders. To the front of the house is a paved terrace with a small pond and there is also a second terrace to the east with a hot tub and summer house. Within the garden is an enclosed meditation area which has been planted to reflect the mood of three Tibetan deities.
To the east is a paddock/orchard of about 1.2 acres and this has vehicular access via a second driveway. Red Chimneys is situated on the outskirts of the village of Colaton Raleigh and nestles in some of East Devon's most attractive countryside between the Regency coastal towns of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton. Colaton Raleigh has a small but active village community and has the Otter Inn public house, shop and pretty church of St John the Baptist. It lies approximately 4½ miles inland from the coast which is a World Heritage site known as the Jurassic Coast. There are fabulous country and coastal walks in the near vicinity, which include a very scenic route along the River Otter (from Otterton Mill to Budleigh Salterton), and the South West Coastal Path which stretches the whole of the East Devon coastline and from which beautiful views can be gained over the dramatic cliffs.
Budleigh Salterton is some 4 miles to the south and is a very popular seaside resort with wide pebble beach and genteel air. It has an attractive range of independent shops and eateries and hosts a wealth of literary and musical events. The popular town of Sidmouth is about 6 miles away and besides a range of independent shops and boutiques, has its own theatre, cinema, swimming pool and a cricket pitch overlooking the sea. The vibrant university city of Exeter is some 13 miles away and has excellent shopping centre, theatres, cinemas, mainline rail link to London (Waterloo and Paddington), international airport and M5 access.
From the A3052 coastal road, heading in a westerly direction, turn left at the mini roundabout in Newton Poppleford onto the B3178 signposted Colaton Raleigh and Budleigh Salterton. Proceed for about 1 mile, turning left (by a green triangle) signposted Dotton, and then immediately right signposted Otter Farm. Follow this lane for about half a mile, where the driveway to Red Chimneys will be found on your left hand side.
