DESCRIPTION

Old Rectory is a Victorian house built in about 1896 to replace the original, more modest, residence that was destroyed by fire. It has been built on a grand scale to satisfy the tastes of the wealthy Canadian wife of the rector, who was the youngest son of the Earl of Coventry. Sadly, she died before the house was finished and the rector elected to live in a smaller house nearby. The house was let by the church until it was sold in the 1950’s. It was used to run a successful business incorporating a licensed wedding venue and bed and breakfast with holiday cottages until bought by the current owners who have returned the house into a comfortable family home.
Old Rectory is built of stone construction with a slate roof, with stone chimneys and mullioned windows. Approached via stone steps through large double doors into a vestibule. The reception hall has oak flooring and a stone fireplace. The large staircase hall provides access to all the reception rooms. The drawing room has fantastic proportions with an ornate fireplace. There are fantastic views from this part of the house. The spacious dining room is at the front of the house and has wood flooring with a large fireplace. A light hallway that leads to the kitchen. The kitchen is a real focal point of Old rectory, with flagstone floors, under floor heating and an impressive vaulted ceiling. The Chalon units include a central island a 4-oven gas-fired Aga, two sinks and a separate oven and hob. There are double doors at each end of the room, one leading to the courtyard garden surrounded by dry stone walls and flanked by mature trees in the bank, the other leading to a courtyard with a feature fountain. The extensive cellars are accessed from the hall and provide a large area for storage. Elsewhere downstairs, there is a study with views to the front of the house, a spacious laundry room, utility room and boot room/WC, close to the back door. There is also a formal cloakroom accessed from the staircase hall.

The oak staircase rises to the large landing on the first floor. The master bedroom has a marble fireplace and views to the west over rolling countryside. This links through to a dressing room with open fronted cupboards and shelving, through to an en suite bathroom with roll top bath, double length shower, wash basin and WC. Bedroom 2 also has impressive proportions and a marble fireplace, leading through to an en suite bathroom. Bedrooms 3, 4 and 5 are all good sizes and share a family shower room and WC. Bedroom 6 could also be used as a gymnasium or music room. There is a linen cupboard on the
main landing.

Stairs to the second floor are found behind a wooden door. There are 2 bedrooms (one of which is panelled) and a bathroom on this floor, as well as a storage room.

Please see the floor plan for a detailed layout of the accommodation.
