HISTORIC CITY

Built in 2000, their modern, three-storey townhouse nestles in a quiet courtyard in one of Norwich's many historic sites. This corner of the city was once home to dye works for which the city was famed, as well as local saw mills. Indigo was one of the main colours used for fabrics in Medieval times, and woad to make it is thought to have been brought in by boat. Norwich, which was the focus of a recent episode of Channel 4's Britain's Most Historic Towns, has a long and colourful history. The Medieval era was a particularly prosperous time for the city, with a surge in wool trade and weaving. The wealth of the city can still be seen today in the many buildings dating from this era. It is also famed for its Norman cathedral and castle.

A VIBRANT HUB

Norwich is a vibrant place to live, with an abundance of art galleries, cinemas, theatres and music venues. It is renowned for its major shopping areas, which include two shopping mallswith high street names, as well as cobbled lanes and back streets of independent shops. There is an array of restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as parks and green open spaces. "Being able to walk into the city to see a film or go to a play has been one of the great pleasures of living here," she adds.

BRIGHT INTERIOR

The attractive property presents inviting accommodation across three storeys. It is entered at ground floor level where there is an integral garage and utility room. The sunny drawing room is located on the first floor, together with the kitchen dining room which has ample space for a table and chairs. On the floor above, the property offers two bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room. "We have updated the kitchen and bathrooms since being here," she says. "The kitchen now feels bright and open, and quite minimalist in style. It has good storage and work space, with matt cream units and Corian mix work surfaces. The bathrooms also have modern, high quality fittings."

SUNNY COURTYARD

The property, which is decorated in fairly neutral shades, has offered easy living, she suggests. "The kitchen is a good size for meals and to sit and chat over a cup of coffee: we have had dinner parties there with up to eight people round the table," she says. "There are double doors through into the drawing room, making it easy to move through to where the comfortable seating is." The house opens on to a pretty courtyard garden, which is colourful in the spring and summer months. "It is especially nice to sit out here in the afternoon and evening when it is lovely and sunny."

EXCELLENT LOCATION

It is possible to reach the train station on foot from Indigo Yard: from here there are trains into London, as well as to Cambridge, Peterborough, Liverpool and other national destinations. It is quick to leave Norwich by road, giving access to the beautiful Norfolk coast, the famous Broads and some picturesque countryside locations. "We will be sad to leave here," she admits. "This is a very convenient place to be and yet you also have your privacy. The house itself is easy and economical to run - it has solar panels - and has a welcoming atmosphere. We have also enjoyed living somewhere which has history in a modern home."
