GENERAL INFORMATION
'Houlland' is set in an elevated high above the road to the village of Burravoe which lies in the south-east corner of the island of Yell. The house is situated on the western perimeter of the village just over a mile from the local primary school and heritage centre / tea room. There are a couple of shops and fuel stations in the area, at Ulsta by the ferry terminal, and also at Aywick about six miles to the north, although the main amenities on the island at situated in the main population centre of Mid Yell about 8 miles to the north where you will find the island's Junior High School, leisure centre & swimming pool, and health centre.

Measuring about 19 miles by 7.5 miles wide and having a population of 950, Yell is connected to mainland Shetland by a regular ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from Ulsta at the south end of the island, about four miles from the house, to Toft about 27 miles north of Lerwick. A similar service runs from Gutcher to the north to the neighbouring islands of Unst and Fetlar. The Shetland Islands themselves lie in the middle of the North Sea about 100 miles north of mainland Scotland, and are in fact closer to Bergen in Norway than to Edinburgh. A daily overnight ferry service links Shetland with Orkney & Aberdeen (North Link Ferries), and Loganair provides regular flights from Sumburgh Airport at the southern tip of Shetland to Aberdeen, Glasgow & Edinburgh.

Spread over 100 islands, 15 of them inhabited, Shetland offers spectacular and unspoilt scenery together with a wide variety of wildlife and many places of historical and archeological interest. Thanks to the oil boom of the 1970's, the island enjoys an excellent range of services including a network of leisure centres (including the one in Mid Yell itself) and excellent transport links with good road and inter-island ferry networks.
