CHARACTER, HISTORY, LOCATION - This former stable block has it all. The property is situated in a private gated development forming Westcliff park which offers extensive grounds, giving it all the advantages of a small country estate. On offer there is an attractive lounge, separated fitted kitchen and cloakroom to the ground floor and two bedrooms and en suite on the first floor. There is also allocated parking and rear garden.
George IV granted the port its unique title of Royal Harbour after a warm welcome from the citizens of Ramsgate. It nestles between the two cliffs, West and East , across which, the locals claim, you will find more listed buildings than in any British town except Bath. Westcliff House was reportedly built in 1795 for a trader with the East India Company, but soon passed through the hands of an Irish absentee landlord to those of a wealthy but unmarried merchant. It stayed in the family for the next hundred years, and was often let to distinguished visitors, including the Duchess of Kent and her Daughter, the future Queen Victoria. Princess Victoria's beloved secret garden with its private door remain features of the estate.
The dramatic political intrigues of Victoria's early years played themselves out in the verandas and mullioned bays of Westcliff House, as did private, homely girlhood tragedies - her pet donkey is buried in the grounds, watched over by the round, battlement flint tower. Today, donkeys still ply the beaches and on special occasions the locals parade the cliffs in Victorian costume.
Between the wars Westcliff housed a girls' school, until the army took over in 1939. With victory, it became a hotel for two years, after which the sisters of Bon Secours converted it into a nursing home.
Ramsgate faces south. Fine weather, sea and boats grace this elegant resort on the Isle of Thanet, with views past Deal and St. Margarets to France. Originally a fishing village, in the eighteenth century a thriving trade with the Baltic ports brought riches and expansion. The stunning new architecture of the town with its sweeping Regency crescents, terraces marching over the hills, villas and verandas, attracted nobility and royalty.
Ramsgate's Royal Harbour still attracts visitors from all over the world. Located in Kent, the Isle of Thanet - 'the garden of England', with its apple orchards and its cherry groves, hops, rolling hills, and luscious green fields - extends a warm welcome. Ramsgate is closer to France than Maidstone, the county seat, and transport connections are excellent and improving.
The area provides opportunities for sports including tennis, bowls, croquet and water sports. The marina has excellent modern facilities and there is a first-class family beach in Ramsgate sands. The annual Ramsgate Spring Festival of art, architecture and music is especially popular with visitors and local residents alike.
Cafes, bars and smart restaurants surround the marina; you can sit with your cappuccino or cocktail overlooking the idyllic harbour, with its yachts and fishing boats bobbing in the breeze.
