Beautifully presented Grade II listed barn conversion with versatile and spacious accommodation

Abbey Barn is tucked away off Grange Road, at the end of a private drive serving a handful of properties; a most desirable address close to the famous Buckfast Abbey and picturesque Hembury Woods. It lies within the boundary of Dartmoor National Park yet just a mile from the A38 which brings the cathedral city of Exeter and the portside city of Plymouth within commuting distance. Buckfast offers a range of local facilities to include a post office/store, restaurant, Inn and primary school. The towns of Ashburton and Buckfastleigh collectively provide a comprehensive range of everyday shops and Inns whilst the larger historic town of Totnes has a thriving shopping centre together with mainline railway services.

Abbey Barn is the major part of a Grade II listed medieval tithe barn which is probably late 13th century in origin. The building survived the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 when the monks of Buckfast were then engaged in farming and more predominately in the woollen industry. It is believed that the barn was used for storing wool fleeces as well as the produce of the surrounding Abbey lands. Abbey Barn then survived the subsequent dereliction of the farm and re-building nearby. It is believed to have retained some of the characteristics of the Great Hall at Dartington Hall, circa 1300. The property was listed in December 1993 and within that listing, it was confirmed that the property was originally known as Abbey Barn at Grange Farm, Grange Road, Buckfast.

Abbey Barn was originally part of Buckfast Abbey and was first converted in the 1970's. The original local grey limestone and slate stone rubble walls remain although the cruck roof construction was replaced with the existing timber framework at the time of conversion. Today Abbey Barn has morphed into a unique and highly stylish individual home that combines immense character and charm with all the comforts of a modern day home. The beautifully presented accommodation is extremely well proportioned and has the potential and versatility to create a self contained annexe if required (subject to planning). There are many lovely features including solid oak interior doors, wood and tiled floors together with a well placed wood burner in the sitting room to complement the exposed stone wall and high pitched beam ceiling. Integral to the property there is a large garage whilst outside a small but delightful south facing enclosed patio garden provides a lovely venue for alfresco dining. In all Abbey Barn would make a lovely family home, yet could so easily be suited to those looking for a holiday home within close proximity to Dartmoor.
