Full description

Crompton’s Cottage, a Grade I Listed chocolate-box cottage on Firwood Fold in the Tonge Moor area of the town was the birthplace of Samuel Crompton, the inventor of the Spinning Mule.

The house in which a pioneer of the Lancashire industrial revolution was born has come onto the market in Bolton. Stepping into Crompton’s Cottage is like stepping back in time. The building dates back to 1610 and retains a wealth of historical character, with its Grade I listing reflecting the significant historical interest of the property.

Its thatched roof covers a timber frame clad in stone with rendered side elevations and plenty of exposed beams. There are two bedrooms, two receptions rooms and other original features include: stone mullion windows and the original fireplace. The gable fronted property has attractive views across a lake and woodland.Crompton lived on Firwood Fold from his birth in 1753 until 1758, before leaving for rented accommodation with his family in nearby Hall i’ the’ Wood, where his father was a caretaker. He is known for inventing the Spinning Mule, a hybrid of James Hargreaves’ Spinning Jenny and Arkwright’s Water Frame in 1779 after becoming disillusioned with the deficiencies of existing machinery whilst earning a living spinning cotton as a child labourer. He is believed to have spent six years working in secret on his new machine which spun fibers into yarn and ended up revolutionising the textile industry worldwide.Tel 01204 659670
