We were reading up on a bit of local history about the area on the We Are Wood Street website (great site – worth a read). Apparently there used to be an annual eight mile run sponsored, from 1920, by the owner of a local café. It was open to anyone living within a mile and a half of Wood Street and the first prize was a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings! Fortunately, you don’t have to put yourself through anything quite so strenuous (or travel quite so far) in order to grab something to eat in and around Upper Walthamstow these days. Wander down to Wood Street and check out the burgers at The Duke (the sweet potato fries are great), or grab a pizza at Marielucia. If you’re after something more genteel, stroll down to Hillman’s Tea Rooms and partake of afternoon tea (with a slice or two of cake of course). Even the delights of the Ravenswood, with the neon extravaganza that is God’s Own Junkyard, and the delights of Mother’s Ruin and the Wildcard, are considerably less than an eight mile run away. But don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s all about the bright lights, because this house also sits on the very edge of the green expanses of Epping Forest and Hollow Ponds, making it the perfect spot for those of you who love cycling, running, or just allowing the family dog to take you out for a gentle walk every day. All this, and a train into the City from Wood Street every 15 minutes for the daily commute. Frankly, it would almost be worth an eight mile run just to check out the area…
Living Here... - Yes, yes – we know we’ve said it before, but yellow London brick just makes us smile. It’s just such a beautiful building material, and when you see it used on a magnificent square bayed house like this….well, your smile simply gets broader and broader. However, we digress – you want to know more about the inside! Wander through the imposing front door and the first thing that grabs your attention is the stunning tiled flooring of the hallway, which immediately roots this property in its history. It also guides you into the first of the two beautiful reception rooms, both of which also retain original features, like ornate plasterwork to the ceilings and stripped wood flooring, and whilst the front room benefits from the bay window, the rear one offers access to the garden via French doors. Outside, you will discover a beautiful and secluded rear garden, complete with covered decking, offering plenty of space in which to entertain al fresco when the weather permits. All in all, this is quite simply a beautiful house, and if it doesn’t make you smile like we do, then you may want to check your heart isn’t made of stone…
In This Area - By Walthamstow Diary - Picture the scene; you are sat in a café, melting in to the best hot chocolate you have ever had, watching Morris Dancers whack each other with sticks, whilst a man dressed as a giant ram chases after a group of kids. Wood Street is the kind of place where this sort of stuff happens all the time. As well as events and family fun days, you will also find a load of street art courtesy of Wood Street Walls. Visit Wood Street Indoor Market and roam its narrow corridors which are packed with antiques, vintage, and all sorts of curiosities. The Georgian Village is home to Hillman’s Tea Rooms who serve the most amazing afternoon tea, and there’s also a tiny rum bar tucked away right at the back that is well worth a visit. The Duke pub is good for beer and burgers, whilst the Flower Pot is a more traditional pub and is fully equipped with pool tables and dart boards. Hollow ponds boating lake and Epping Forest is just a short walk up Wood Street, this is a great spot to exercise dogs and kids. As for the hot chocolate, it’s served by Café Bonito, and is simply wondrous.
