The village is worthy of a picture book, the thatched cottages set all ways on the slope southward down to a ford (Pevsner).
Melbury Osmond, set along a no-through road, is rightly regarded as one of Dorsets premier villages. Comprising of almost entirely period houses at its heart, stringent planning controls have prevented incongruous development over the years and thus the special character noted by the eminent architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his Buildings of England has been retained. The surrounding countryside (most of which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) has been in the hands of the Ilchester Estate for centuries, whose careful stewardship of the land has helped to craft the landscape for which this part of West Dorset is well known. Indeed, this is prime Hardy country, with rolling hills dotted with pretty villages giving way eventually to the high peaks of the Dorset coast at Golden Cap and West Bay. Communications have improved in recent years with the A37 easily accessible and linking with the A31 and A303. Mainline railway stations are at Yeovil Junction and Sherborne, both serving London Waterloo and Exeter, whilst the Weymouth to Bristol/Cardiff line is at Yetminster. The high speed cross channel ferry from Poole to Cherbourg takes 2 ½ hours (summer only). Nearby Yetminster has an excellent village shop, butcher and post office aswell as a primary school, whilst Sherborne, Dorchester and Yeovil are all within comfortable drives. Whilst scholars have long debated the precise location of Thomas Hardys Kings Hintock, the setting of The Woodlanders, the author admitted that in his minds eye Melbury Osmond was a strong influence on his fictional village. What is not in doubt is his personal real-life connection with Melbury
Osmond - his parents were married in the church.
This area is particularly well noted for its schools with St Anthonys Leweston, Sherborne Boys and Girls Schools, Bryanston, Canford, and Milton Abbey all within easy reach. There are also a good number of excellent preparatory schools in the regions. There is a primary school and nursery in Yetminster.
