Description

A fragment of the house from medieval times survives in the roof above the dining room, one bay of a king-post hall roof, a rare feature and is tentatively dated to 1410. The house we see today is essentially an Elizabethan one, which has been continually altered and embellished over 400 years. The main features were built in the 1580s, with the Dutch gables added in 1637 with a final wing in the same style added in the 1890s. It is a fascinating document of the changing use of the same family house.

Crucially the most recent alterations, carried out between 2008 and 2010 show almost no visible changes to the appearance of the three principal facades nor to the main rooms within the house. Except to say that these subtle changes, are in many ways the most revolutionary in its 500 years history and arise from a complete re thinking of the way a house of this age and character can be adapted and comfortably enjoyed in the 21st Century.

From London take the M11 North towards Cambridge/Stanstead airport. Take the A120 East towards Stanstead airport/ Colchester. take the B1256 exit towards Takely/Thaxted/Great Dunmow. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit to the B1256. Follow the B1256, and at the roundabout take the first exit into Great Dunmow (Stortford Road) at the roundabout take the first exit onto Rosemary Lane, continue onto the downs. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto the causeway/ B1008, go over one roundabout. Turn right onto Lime Tree Hill/ B1057 and continue through Great Bardfield towards Finchingfield. As you come into Finchingfield, pass the Fox Inn public house on the left and the village green and duck pond on the right. Follow the road over the small bridge and immediately turn left following signs for Spains Hall. Spains Hall is on the right after about a mile.
