The town also has state primary and secondary schools. There is private schooling locally at The Compass in Haddington (primary), Loretto in Musselburgh and Belhaven Hill (preparatory) in Dunbar, with a wider choice being offered in Edinburgh, many of which provide direct bus services from East Lothian.
The Old Manse is an impressive stone building under a slate roof. Although it has been extended many times, it is known to date from the 1600s. The accommodation extends over three floors and has been comprehensively upgraded in recent years although many original period features remain including ornate plasterwork, working shutters and fireplaces. Within the most recent renovations the plumbing and wiring have been upgraded. Furthermore, there is Category 5e, speaker and CT100 TV cabling throughout, and the sash windows have all been overhauled and draught proofed.

The house sits within a garden of approximately ¾ acre bounded by a stone wall and granted privacy by a number of spectacular mature trees. There is a climbing frame on the extensive lawn and a trampoline sits above the orchard which, together with the kitchen garden, occupies the steeper part of the garden and has a mix of mature and young fruit trees.
