Townhouse in the heart of St Andrews with 6 bedrooms (2 en suite) and a private courtyard garden
59 South Street is part of a row of traditional terraced houses situated in the heart of St Andrews. The town is renowned worldwide as the ‘Home of Golf’. The Old Course is a regular host to the Open Championship which was last held there in 2015. There are now six further golf courses run by the St Andrews Links Trust, including the Castle Course opened in 2009. There are many other golf courses in the area including the Duke’s Course, two courses at Fairmount, St Andrews Bay and Kingsbarns.
St Andrews is also well known for its university which is one of the oldest in Britain, founded in 1410. The town provides good state schooling at Madras College and private schooling at St Leonards, and Dundee High School is within easy reach. The town has an excellent range of shops, hotels, restaurants and recreational and cultural facilities. Beyond St Andrews is the East Neuk of Fife, with a spectacular coastline which boasts fishing villages built around picturesque harbours and sandy unspoilt beaches.
Access by rail, road and air is good. Leuchars railway station (4 miles) is on the main Aberdeen to London line and provides a fast link to Dundee and Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport, with its increasingly wide range of domestic and international flights, is only 50 miles away and Dundee Airport (15 miles) has regular services to London Stansted. There is a dual carriageway and motorway connection to Edinburgh from Kirkcaldy (20 miles). An alternative route is via Cupar on the A91 to join the M90 at Junction 8 (25 miles).
59 South Street is a superb terraced townhouse set right in the heart of St Andrews. The house was remodelled by locally renowned architect George Rae in 1866 and his crest remains above one of the windows. Rae’s most famous contribution to St Andrews was phase one of the R&A Clubhouse although the world famous building now bears little resemblance to his original design. He also designed a hotel in 1868 which is now St Regulus halls of residence for St Andrews University. His neoclassical style is identifiable throughout St Andrews with examples at Greyfriars Gardens, Gillespie Terrace, North Street and Bell Street.
The accommodation retains an abundance of traditional character including exposed stone walls, timber ceiling beams, solid wooden flooring and bay windows with working shutters overlooking South Street.
The front door leads into an inner porch with decorative tiled flooring, timber panelling, fitted coat hooks and a partially glazed door leading through to the entrance hall. The staircase leads up to the first floor above, however at a halfway landing a door leads off to the utility room which is plumbed for a washing machine and tumble dryer and also houses the Worcester boiler. A door from here also leads out into the rear courtyard.
The principal reception rooms are a dining room and a sitting room, both of which have south facing windows with working shutters overlooking South Street. The sitting room has solid wood flooring and exposed stone walls on two aspects. Across the hall is the kitchen which also has exposed stone walls and windows overlooking the rear courtyard. It is fitted with a range of units along with an integrated sink, a Bosch dishwasher and a Rangemaster Leisure cooker.
The staircase continues up to the second floor. Halfway up there is a shower room with WC, wash hand basin and shower cubicle. There are three bedrooms situated off the second floor landing. Two of them are south facing and one of the two has a box room / study and two fitted cupboards. The third bedroom is north facing and has an en suite bathroom with WC, wash hand basin and bath with electric shower over. There is an under stair storage cupboard off the landing.
The third floor has a further three bedrooms, two of which have dormer windows looking onto South Street. The other has a Velux window, with views over the neighbouring gardens and the rooftops of St Andrews to the north, a fireplace and an en suite WC.
