Tenure: Freehold

If you are looking for a large and attractive country residence that is full of period charm and steeped in history this delightful five/six bedroom detached house on the outskirts of Birchington should really fit the bill. Called 'Two Chimneys' after the two large and ornate chimneys that are a landmark for the surrounding area, the house oozes with character that is apparent from the moment you sweep into the private driveway and see the house for the first time. The land the house stands on was originally part of the Quex estate and Museum that was built by the famous explorer and hunter Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton. There are magnificent wooden doors that abound throughout the property as well as materials from Margate Pier and an original beam from the Margate Life Boat with the oar rest still intact! Other lovely features include beamed ceilings, multipane sash windows and unusual fireplaces. The house nestles in large grounds surrounding the property, enclosed within the original wall and an impressive hedge that screens the house from neighbouring buildings. It is accessed via a private driveway with space in front of the house for three or four cars. The wraparound garden incorporates patios for al fresco dining and lawns interspersed with a multitude of wonderful specimen trees and shrubs as well as a rockery, a central garden feature, a garden shed and a greenhouse. The drive continues alongside the garden to additional parking spaces where there is a large workshop, storage area and planning permission for a double garage. Internally this lovely family home provides plenty of opportunities for flexible accommodation and from the moment you walk into the warm and welcoming hall through the original front door and see the beamed ceiling and historic barley twist staircase, you can feel the family friendly atmosphere emanating from the house. The lovely large sitting room is just the place for a cosy night in with its very impressive floor to ceiling brick patterned fireplace while for day time you can enjoy the delights of the magnificent similar sized garden room extension overlooking the garden.

What the Owner says:

“My parents and I bought Two Chimneys in 1982 and it has been a wonderful family home and a place to bring up my children. However there is just me living here now so I feel it is time to downsize and move near to my daughter. There was an adjacent campsite which we bought three years after we moved and developed it into a caravan park that was sold recently. Although the house is near the park it is extremely quiet and you rarely hear any noise but there is the advantage that anyone who owns this house will have access to the facilities available at the 100 acre holiday park. These include the indoor swimming pool with flume, two adventure playgrounds and the restaurant – so would be ideal for a family with young children.
Over the years I have enjoyed upgrading the property with a new kitchen and the lovely conservatory & garden room extension. It is a great place for entertaining and I have always had friends and family to stay – and it looks particularly lovely at Christmas when decorations can enhance the special features.
Although we are in the countryside it is still very convenient for transport links as we are only a minute from the main road for the Thanet Way to Canterbury and London and it is only a couple of minutes drive to the station with the high speed rail to St Pancras. There is the nearby Quex Farm Shop as well as some delightful individual shops and a supermarket, pubs and restaurants."
