4 bedroom terraced house for saleHampton Court Road, East Molesey, Surrey
A splendid example of a William and Mary Grade ll listed former grace and favour four/five bedroom house (over 2300 sq.ft.), located in a conservation area on the south western side of Hampton Court Green, moments from the gates of Hampton Court Palace and within a stroll of river and station.
Originally a Tudor building of lath and plaster construction, the house is mentioned in Henry VIII's accounts as belonging to John Chapman, Cardinal Wolsey's and subsequently Henry's, Head Gardener. A house with many historic associations, it once formed part of The Old Court House, the official residence at Hampton Court of the Surveyor of the Kings Works. Sir Christopher Wren was granted a lease of the Surveyors house in 1708 and other connections include Capability Brown and rumours that Nell Gwyn and King Charles ll met at the house in the late 17th Century.
This historic home has an abundance of period features including ornate ceiling cornicing, period mouldings, tall sash windows, original wooden shutters and handsome fireplaces whilst also benefitting from impressive room proportions throughout.
Approached by a gated and walled front courtyard, the vaulted entrance hall has double height ceilings scaling to the first floor with wide board oak flooring and an "oeil-de-boeuf" oval window above the entrance. To the front of the house the Dining Room is one of three impressive rectangular reception rooms (identically sized 21 by 12 ft.) and features two large sash windows (with views out to the walled entrance courtyard towards Hampton Court Green), ornate dentil cornicing with hand painted heraldic frieze below and oak floor boards hand painted in a period chequered pattern. The Shaker style fitted kitchen/breakfast room has terracotta flooring, extensive storage cabinets with wooden work tops, painted panels and Butler sink enjoying views over the courtyard garden. There is ample room for a dining table in the centre of the room and a back door leads to a secluded and sheltered walled patio garden with access onto a mews courtyard and garage. Downstairs also includes a cloakroom with W.C and hand basin.
To the first floor, the formal drawing room mirrors the proportions of the dining room below and the two tall sash windows offer stunning views over Hampton Court Green. Features include decorative mantelpiece, marble hearth and cast iron fire basket (gas-effect). A well-proportioned first floor master bedroom suite includes an en-suite bathroom with separate shower and W.C and offers views to the rear overlooking the private courtyard garden.
On the second floor, bedroom three, is the third of the 21 by 12ft rooms and is currently used as a library and office. The views through the double windows over the green are again magnificent. Features include extensive range of custom built bookcases and an open fireplace with stone hearth and mantelpiece. There are two further double bedrooms over the second and third floor which share the family bathroom fitted with bath, W.C and hand basin and slate tiled floor.
