The Story

Ever since they have been at Old Village Farmhouse, the current owners have discovered something wonderful and exciting almost every year. Their attractive thatched home is believed to be approximately 400 years old and is something of a treasure chest when it comes to revealing its fascinating features, one of them explains. "This house has so many hidden treasures," he says. "My wife and I often say we find something new here every year, whether that is another cubby hole that has been covered up or the original holes where a piece of wood would have been put across to lock a door. We have enjoyed restoring some of these."

WARM AND WELCOMING

Grade II Listed Old Village Farmhouse is thought to be the oldest house in Bonvilston, with the rest of the village growing up around it. "It was originally built as a Welsh long house and is thought to have been home to the manager of the Mackintosh hunting estate at some point in the past," he says. "We loved it because it had such magnificent character and features, including two original bread ovens. We wanted a home that was different and as soon as we walked in we realised this one was unique. There was a fire roaring and the whole house was warm and welcoming - it felt like home immediately."

ALL IN THE DETAIL

After moving in, the owners renovated the house, carefully updating it in keeping with its character while also ensuring it became a home suitable for modern day living. "We have made huge changes to the place since moving here in 1999," he explains. "The floors were dug up by about 4ft or 5ft and then built up again with membrane and tanking to ensure they were damp proof; the whole house was also made much lighter and brighter throughout to give it a much more open feel." Old Village Farmhouse has also been beautifully decorated in carefully chosen colour schemes and given new flooring and soft furnishings. "Every last detail was carefully considered - even the light switches, which are from Jim Lawrence, were bespoke," he adds.

OUTSTANDING HOME

Accommodation at Old Village Farmhouse is arranged over three levels. On the ground floor, it includes large drawing and sitting rooms, each with an abundance of character and an inglenook fireplace. There is also a farmhouse-style kitchen, with a range cooker, as well as a utility room and boot room. There are six double bedrooms in the property in total, including the magnificent first-floor master bedroom suite, which has its own dressing room and mezzanine study or dressing room, together with a beamed, pitched ceiling. "The whole house is comfortable to live in and extremely inviting," he points out. "Our children were born five years after we arrived here and this has been a wonderful place for them to grow up. There are so many different rooms for people to spread out into and it has also been excellent for entertaining - having dinner parties with friends and birthday celebrations for the children."

A SPECIAL FEEL

The character of the house was enhanced with carefully chosen new bathrooms and kitchen fittings: these were chosen to bring modern levels of comfort while also tying in with the style of the property. "The kitchen is bespoke," he explains. "It was handmade by a company in Edinburgh and has a country style, with wooden and granite work surfaces." He adds: "This is one of our favourite rooms - we love sitting round the table together as a family, playing games, with a fire lit in the wood-burning stove. We also love our bedroom, however, with its lovely high ceiling and stairs up to the smaller room above, it has a very special feel."

GREAT LOCATION

Set back from the road, the charming house has a pretty front garden, as well as space at the back. "The children used to play football and rugby in the garden, and we could eat outside. Because we lived on a cul-de-sac, the children could also play out safely with their friends or ride their bicycles." The family enjoyed proximity to local parks, good shops and schools, and the attractive market town of Cowbridge. "We used to enjoy going into Cowbridge every Saturday to walk around the town and have coffee," he recalls. "On the other hand, we were also just 10 minutes from Cardiff and the motorway. It was a great place to be as we had access to everything in the city, as well as to beautiful countryside and woodland. I enjoy playing golf and there is also a course very close to the house." He adds: "We enjoyed everything about living at Old Village Farmhouse - it is such a lovely house and it is in a perfect position."

Heading west on the M4, take the slip road at Junction 33 and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the A4232. Proceed for approximately 3.6 miles and take the slip road to Culverhouse Cross. At the roundabout take the fourth exit, passing Tesco and Marks & Spencer on the right, and proceed over the lights onto the A48 (Cowbridge Road). Proceed for approximately 5 miles passing by Cottrell
Park Golf Resort. Turn Right onto Maes-Y-Ffynon and first left on Village Farm Road and bear to your left. The property will be on your left hand side.
