Taylor Hill & Bond welcome this wonderful Six bedroom Georgian property located on the Historic East Side of Fareham, close to motorway links, train station, shops, bars and restaurants. The property dates back to the 1750's and boasts many original features. This home has been well maintained by the current occupier. The single storey entrance hall was added in the early 19th Century, this enabled the original passage hall to be incorporated into the sitting room. The stable was another later addition which predates the walls of the stable yard. The kitchen block with the bathroom above dates from 1987, the roof has its original clay peg tiles, stripped by the 1987 storm, but reinstated as part of a general restoration in that year. The house was purchased by a Mr. Harding in 1870 and his son and later granddaughter lived in the house until 1987. Mr Harding carried out a number of restorations to the house, which gives it some Victorian features, as well as a Georgian character.
The sitting room:
skirting board and door c.1880
fireplace is a 1987 Georgian replacement of the 1930's item, which in turn had replaced the original Georgian design. The Georgian hob has a marble surround.
The dining room:
The fireplace is another replacement, the original black marble fireplace was removed in the 1930's. The present item is a 19th century Gothic item, set within an early 19th century marble surround.
The staircase is Georgian but it has lost its mahogany hand rail, which was replaced at some point by a softwood rail, now painted brown in the 18th century tradition.
The front bedroom:
This room has its original 18th century fireplace complete with wooden surround. The 18th century cupboard door to the left has its original spring catch handle.
The rear bedroom:
This room has a 19th century fireplace, flanked by two 18th century cupboard doors, each with original spring catch handles. More 18th century panelling may be found in both rooms above their respective fireplaces but obscured by plaster.
The bathroom:
This room has Villeroy Boch fittings (as with the downstairs lavatory) with black granite tops to the flat surfaces.
The bedroom above the coach house has it own en-suite shower room.
The stairway to the attic bedrooms has its original 18th century wooden panelling.
The kitchen: This sits on the foundations of the old kitchen, photos of which are available. The oven, hob and microwave are by Bosch as well as the fridge and freezer. The work-surfaces are of Venetian-gold granite.
The coach house has plumbing for a washing machine and sink as well as plenty of cupboard-space.
Outside:
The 18th century walled garden has raised herbaceous borders with a raised fishpond as the central feature. Paths are of gravel with York-stone paving, some of which is original to the house, augmented by salvaged York-stone from local sources.
The painted iron railings at the front of the house are replacements for those lost during the war. They are based on 18th century examples in the High Street. The front door-case, which is in the Regency style, was completely renewed around 5 years ago, however the front door is in large part still original.
The stable-yard is paved with 19th century stable-yard paving-blocks, which were removed from a 19th Century house in Swanmore.
The Stable:
This section of the house has been fitted out as a separate apartment, following a general restoration, which included a rebuilding of the front wall, during which the original bricks were re-used, copying the original brick bonding and reinstating the hayloft door, which is now a dummy door. The original winch, for hauling up the hay is still in situ. Inside the actual stable now forms a general living room with a Georgian fireplace complete with marble surround and provision for washing machine, tumble dryer, sink unit, cupboards, hob, oven and extractor hood. Upstairs is a large bedroom with a separate en-suite bathroom. The room has cupboards and a large Oak beam as a central feature.
