• Thought to have been built by Queen Victoria for her equerries

• The one bedroom apartment is situated in the former stables. The original wood panelling and tie rings are now a feature in the sitting room. The manger from the stables has been attached under the window and is now used as a window box. The bedroom would have housed the carriage with the siting room being the stables for 2 horses. Above the apartment is what would have been the stable boy’s quarters. It has shuttered windows with the shutters angled so the stable boy could not observe the family in the garden. The original water pump and trough, used for washing the horses and carriages, still exists in the now current car park. The car park area would also have been used to plant vegetables.

• ‘The Kiss’ written by writer and royal biographer Hugo Vickers documents a charming account of events surrounding a kiss, all of which took place at 159 Clarence Road referred to as ‘Dargai’ in the book. The house was named ‘Dargai’ by Mrs Kappey in memory of the place in India where her husband died. It was then left to the Kappey sisters to look after their mother for the next 60 years.

• The current owners are acknowledged by the author.

• The garden would also have been used to grow fruit and vegetables. The square holes in the brick wall close to the terrace were for cloche posts. They would have inserted horizontal posts in these hole supported by vertical uprights and draped with cloth to protect the fruit & vegetables. This also explains the well-established pear, apple & walnut trees as well as the red & white grape vines.
• The Kappey dogs are buried somewhere in the garden. The wooden plaques are still there, the oldest being 1899.
