Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Share of Freehold

Configured across four floors and a fifth floor roof terrace in the Wallis Building, this two-bedroom penthouse apartment, with covered off-street parking, embodies the seamless marriage of two of the twentieth century’s most exuberant architectural styles. Originally designed in 1938 by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, the eponymous building was entirely refurbished by Terry Farrell in the mid-80s.

Wallis was one of Britain’s principle proponents of the Art Deco style, famed for his Egyptian-inflected Grade II*-listed Hoover Building in Perivale. Between 1985-88, the bold Art Deco foundations were revamped by Sir Terry Farrell, one of the founding fathers of architectural Post-Modernism.

The unique manner in which Farrell’s ‘architecture of allusion’ has taken the decorative baton of Art Deco and ushered it into modernity earned the building the admiration of famed architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner who referred to it as, “Farrell’s exuberant Art Deco extravaganza in Penfold Street.”

The refurbishment introduced two jagged canopies projecting at roof level above the entrances, supported by a triplet of cone-shaped capitals. These features are arguably the building’s defining external flourishes, but the preservation of the factory’s original features inside are equally impressive; large Crittall-framed windows and high ceilings are present throughout, while large spiral steel staircases provide access across floors and emphasise the former industrial life of the building.

The apartment is the largest in the building; internal accommodation extends to approximately 1,548 sq ft across four floors. Due to the unique design of the building, the apartment has no neighbours on either side. In addition, as the apartment is not street-facing, it is extremely quiet and secure. Entry is gained via an elevated steel corridor which looks over the offices of Farrell’s Architectural Practice, based in the Old Aeroworks next door.

Upon entry, the apartment opens out into an open-plan kitchen and dining room, with high ceilings and excellent levels of natural light due to its dual aspect large factory windows. American oak floorboards run throughout. The first floor is occupied in its entirety by a large reception room, this space forms the communal heart of the apartment.

The two floors above are each occupied by a large bedroom with en-suite and a private roof terrace, and a master bedroom and family bathroom, respectively. These tranquil sleeping quarters are positioned high above the tree tops below and offer wonderful views of the city beyond. A further roof terrace on the very top floor is accessed by spiral staircase. This roof space has the highest point in the building, an elevated access point above Farrell’s jagged Post-Modern projections with 360 degree views of London encompassing the Wemblet arches to the north and the BT Tower and the Shard to the south.

The apartment has a BOSE sound system throughout including the roof terrace, as well as an allocated secure, covered off-street parking space in the ground floor of the building, and a storage unit of approx. 130 sq ft in the building’s basement.

The Wallis Building is located close to the shops, cafés and restaurants of Edgware Road, Church Street Market and St John’s Wood High Street. Nearby Little Venice offers opportunities for walks along the canal, and green space is provided by Regents and Hyde Parks. The Underground station of Edgware Road is approximately seven minutes away on foot. Paddington National Rail station (and hence Crossrail) is also within a short walk , with direct services to Heathrow Airport, and there is quick road access to the West via the A40.
