We could see immediately that it wasn’t overlooked, that it was a place to let go of worries.”

“By March, dozens of spring bulbs appear, followed by blossom on the pear and apple trees, foxgloves, roses and so much more. In summer, we throw open the huge ancient door from the dining room into the garden. We have friends round to eat at the oak table on the terrace or we can find the perfect spot to sit by the pond, in the shade of a tree or stretched out on the sunny, sheltered lawn. All we hear are bees and more birds than I ever thought possible – from woodpeckers to wrens, nuthatches to coal tits”.

The house is also perfect in the winter. The owners say: “The windows still have original shutters and we have three very effective wood burning stoves as well as underfloor heating. It is a perfect English cottage, full of warmth and atmosphere, but with really grown-up sized rooms and good height to the ceilings.” The beams and inglenook fireplace give period character and the large windows flood the whole house with natural light.

The owner says: “I work in London and from Chippenham station (just over 5 miles away), I am there in an hour. After a day in the office, I come back to the sounds of owls and foxes and all the stress of the day melts away. For starwatchers, it’s perfect – no light pollution here. In the summer, I sometimes work from home with my lap top in the garden, sitting in sunshine in the most perfect south facing garden anyone could imagine. It’s a kind of heaven.”

“Yet this very tranquil place is just minutes away from Corsham with all its history and a very strong community. As well as a big supermarket, there is a thriving Farmer’s Market, good restaurants, schools, independent shops and plenty of coffee shops where we have breakfast at weekends. There is a beautiful walk around Corsham Park, a pretty church and the old house with its peacocks wandering around. There are more stunning walks directly from the house with two nice pubs, “The Harp and Crown”, and “The Pear Tree” within easy walking distance. There are also excellent road links from the A4. The Old Cottage definitely offers the best of all worlds.”
