The Story

A PLACE IN HISTORY
It was 20 years ago now that Betty and her husband first came to Cwmoody but the history of the charming house reaches much further back than that. "I know the cottage goes back at least as far as the 15th century as there is a map in the Usk Museum dating back to the 1600s, which shows a property here. In those days it was called Bryntovey Cottage and would have been home to one of the workmen from Bryntovey Forest," she explains. She adds: "When we saw it, it was being used as a market garden. It was only two miles away from where we were living at the time and we feel in love with it immediately."

CHARACTER HOME
The couple had been searching for their next home for some time. "We decided we wanted to run a cattery here and there was plenty of flat, outside space to do so," she remembers. "We built the two large outbuildings, which now have solar panels that provide energy for the whole house on them. These buildings are still in good condition: someone else could easily start the business up again if they wished to or could possibly use the space for other purposes." They decided to renovate the house itself, which is not Listed: "We tried to retain its character, keeping everything as original as possible," she says.

WARM AND COSY
The property was extended slightly to allow for the creation of a utility room. It was also reroofed, with Roman tiles that were reclaimed from a terraced house in the Valleys, rewired and given a new damp proof course. New flooring was laid and the cottage was decorated in a jasmine white inside to complement the dark wood of the exposed oak beams. "As soon as we got the keys we opened up the inglenook fireplace," she remembers. "There is an original bread oven in there and we had the wood-burner installed. This is now such a lovely cosy room to be in - in winter you can light the fire, draw the curtains and settle down for the evening."

SET IN STONE
The ground floor of the cottage comprises good, flexible living space. This includes the drawing room, south-facing conservatory, office, work room, utility room and kitchen. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, a family bathroom and an en suite bathroom to the master bedroom. "The kitchen is a nice space, with another stone inglenook, where the cooker is now housed. The units were hand-built by a local cabinet-maker and the work surfaces have been replaced with granite in recent times," she says. "The work room is another excellent area: this is where I do bridal alterations but again it could have all sorts of uses." The attractive bedrooms have beamed, vaulted ceilings. "You can lie in bed and think that this cottage has been like this for more than 500 years," she adds.

A PERFECT HOME
Pentovey Cottage has been a magnificent place to entertain friends. There have been many happy dinner parties in the drawing room and kitchen. "At Christmas, we used to put a big table in the conservatory and that was lovely too," she recalls. "We were also here for the New Year's Eve celebrations at the millennium and all went out on to the terrace to watch all the fireworks going off everywhere and to see the Folly Tower at Pontypool all lit up." She adds: "This is a very beautiful area, with lots of good pubs and restaurants nearby. There are places to walk on the doorstep or you can go to the Brecon Beacons. I will take so many happy memories with me when I leave, from renewing my marriage vows to all the time we spent making this such a perfect home."

Setting The Scene

The grounds at Pentovey Cottage extend to approximately one third of an acre. There are two large buildings in the garden that were used as a cattery: these have a separate heating system, lighting and a kitchen. Surrounding the house, the well-kept garden is laid to lawn, with a terrace beside the drawing room. There are plum and apple trees, as well as redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes. To the rear of the garden is a large shed and a garage. The driveway is block paved, with ample room for up to 10 vehicles.
