History
The Needwood Estate was owned by the Bass family of Burton on Trent brewing fame who also owned the nearby Rangemore Hall.

The Hall was later to be extensively rebuilt by Lord Burton in preparation for the visit of King Edward VII in 1902 after he had inherited it, together with the estate, from his father Michael Thomas Bass.

Byrkley Lodge, no longer in existence, was a most impressive mansion set in parkland of over 400 acres and with an estate of about 1,170 acres comprising numerous farms, houses and cottages, many of which have remained today after being sold off in July 1952.


Charyan can be included as part of this history; a beautifully converted two storey barn once part of Lord Burton’s stables and the Needwood Estate.

Part of the National Forest and Rangemore Parish, Byrkley lies amidst lovely pastoral countryside in a popular rural area of Staffordshire. The surrounding area is characterised by undulating farmland interspersed with mature mixed woodland. The hamlet of Rangemore arose because Michael Bass had need of a supporting community of employees and today the village is a popular residential area with its own church and school but has still remained pretty and completely unspoilt.
