Grove House has distinctive stone elevations under a slate
roof and was built in the early 1870s. The property has
excellent accommodation which comprises reception hall,
three further reception rooms, study, cellars, kitchen, store

three bedroom annexe. There is gas fired central heating
to the majority of rooms and a wealth of character features
including many ornate tiled floors, patterned dado rails, sash
windows – some with concealed shutters, stained glass
windows in the porch and many period fireplaces throughout.
There are also panelled walls in the drawing room and dining
room, a pantry with slate shelving and views from rooms on
the first floor over the village towards the Blackmore Vale
countryside beyond.

History
Grove House was believed to be designed by the architect
George Aitchison RA (1825-1910). He was a member and
President of RIBA from 1896 to 1899. The house was built
for the agent of the Stalbridge Estate which was owned by
Lord Richard de Aquila Grosvenor. George Aitchison’s best
known work is Leighton House in London for Baron Leighton.
Grove House was also the birthplace of Admiral of the Fleet
Sir Charles Lamb who served with Distinction in World War II
in campaigns including the Pacific.

Outside
Gateway through a high stone wall leading to the circular
gravelled parking/turning area. The gardens which are mainly
walled are an attractive feature of the property and comprise
lawns, wild flowers, pathways, a good variety of mature trees,
rose beds and flower borders. Part of a range of brick and

hedging, paths, further lawns and kitchen garden area with a

Directions

and you will find Grove House on your left hand side.
