THE STORY ?For me the kitchen is my favourite room,? said Lana. ?I designed it and it features solid oak cabinets with hand-carved oak leaf and acorn motifs.
?There is an Aga, which makes it cosy and warm. It is very much the heart of our home where we have all our family meals.?
Grade II Listed Stammers Farm is a substantial country home, dating back to the 16th century and set in 3.7 acres, complete with an outdoor swimming pool, extensive gardens and paddock.
The couple bought it 23 years ago and when Tracy got married some eight years later they built an annexe cottage for the newly-weds to live in and in which they still reside.
?There is a connecting wall between the two homes, which means they can also be brought together as one large property,? she added.
Originally two farmhouse cottages, Stammers Farm was mentioned in the Domesday Book and features an original chimney dating back to 1514.
In the 20th century it was owned by a local agricultural firm and later privately bought and over the years substantially extended.
?When we first saw the house we loved its location, the fact it is close to both Maldon and Chelmsford and the mainline station at Hatfield Peverel,? said Lana.
?The house was lovely but we knew we wanted to carry out work on it. There are a lot of original beams, some of which were hidden by plaster board. We took it right back and opened it up so all the beams could be restored.
?It has taken a long time but we wanted to ensure that in everything we did, we kept the original character of the property.?
Today, the stunning property offers a high level of comfort and space where the two families regularly host parties for up to 80 guests and get-togethers both inside and out.
?The house lends itself to everything and it doesn?t really matter what the weather is doing,? said Tracy. ?The old cart lodge forms an L-shape around the swimming pool and under it we have our barbecue, pool table, a football table, table tennis and darts board.?
Access to the swimming pool and entertainment area is reached through the conservatory via the impressive-looking dining room which has been the setting for many family occasions.
The fabulous landscaped garden includes its own stream, straddled by a picturesque bridge, and there is also a pretty pond.
?We have had all sorts of parties for the children, including fireworks parties. We have put up bouncy castles in the garden even had a calypso band here,? said Lana.
At the bottom of the garden is an orchard bearing apples and plums, where Lana regularly picks the fruit to make the family?s favourite dessert of crumble pies.
There are paddocks and a stable block (which has also been renovated and is now fully wired), where the family keep their three ponies, two goats, three dogs, 40 chickens and a tortoise.
Situated just a five-minute drive from the seaside resort of Maldon, Stammers Farm combines country-style living with easy access to beaches and the city of London.
From Hatfield Peverel, it takes about half an hour to get into Liverpool Street Station by train, Stansted Airport is just a 20 to 30-minute drive away and the A12 is also close by.
?Maldon is lovely and a day out at the Prom Park will please both the adults and the children,? said Tracy. ?We have lots of lovely walks around here and there is the Blackwater River where you can take a trip on a boat from Hoe Lock.?
However, now that Mike is retiring, the whole family have decided to move back to the West Country where he and Lana are originally from.
?We will be sad to leave,? admitted Lana. ?I have put my heart into this place.?
