The Story

Choosing a bottle of wine from the original racks in the cellar and settling down in front of a roaring fire, the owner of Llanerch savours the warmth and comfort of his period home. The impressive property, which stands within attractive, enclosed gardens, has been his home for approximately eight years now but has been known to him for his whole life. "I grew up in the house next door and so knew its history," he explains. "It was a big house and I was looking for a project and it seemed perfect. I took it on knowing I would do most to the work myself and that it could become a wonderful home."

ORIGINAL CHARACTER
Originally built by the Rhymney Iron Company as its guest house at the end of the 19th century, the Grade II Listed property was later given to the parish and renamed The Vicarage. The current owner bought it in 2009 and it reverted to being called Llanerch, meaning "a clearing in the woods." The current owner says: "There are still lots of original features, including the beautiful staircase and two fireplaces. In the kitchen, there is a smoker in the chimney and in the studio at the back you can see the remains of an old range stove and bread oven. The cellar still has its original wine racks."

HERITAGE COLOURS
Careful renovation has seen him restore the house to its former glory while also enhancing it to become a comfortable, modern day home. Two of the fireplaces are now open and working while a third has been fitted with a wood-burning stove. New central heating and electrics were installed, sash windows were custom built for the house and original shutters were restored. The house was given a new roof and other building works were carried out. "We took the old wallpaper off and found the original colours that were used in the decoration. We matched these to heritage paints and used the same shades in feature walls," he explains.

FABULOUS KITCHEN
Today the ground floor of the house is entered via a porch and central reception hall, where the staircase and a cloakroom can be found. At the front of the property are the formal drawing room and the family room or study, providing two good reception rooms for a family to spread out into. Towards the back of the house is the kitchen breakfast room, which was fully renovated in 2009: "This has an integrated fridge-freezer and dishwasher, and the central island has an integrated waste bin. There is a large range-style cooker, with gas hob and electric ovens and grill, and a slate floor." Leading from the kitchen is a utility room. The dining room is also to the back of the house.

CELEBRATING AT HOME
Four bedrooms and the family bathroom can be found on the first floor. The master bedroom has an en suite shower room. Four more rooms can be found on the second floor. This attic space has the potential to become additional bedrooms or perhaps work or leisure space. "All the first-floor bedrooms are good sizes - we use the room with the en suite shower room as a guest room, which works well for us." The garden, which has been landscaped, offers three lawned areas, and combined with the house has made Llanerch ideal for entertaining. "This is the family party house!" he admits. "We had my nan's 95th birthday party here and have had lots of New Year's Eve celebrations. On occasion, we have had a marquee up on the lawn."

TIME
Rhymney offers good access to Newport, Cardiff and Swansea. "The transport links in the area have improved considerably in recent times, making it much quicker to get to all these places," he says. For those who enjoy walking, cycling or generally being in the great outdoors, it is less than 15 minutes to reach the Brecon Beacons from Llanerch. "We are also close to lots of other large parks here," he points out. He admits he will miss the beautiful house that he has enjoyed restoring. "I have put my heart and soul into it," he says. He has had so much fun watching it come together and sharing it with friends. And on a few occasions even sharing it with people he doesn't know. "They filmed scenes for cult television series Dr Who here," he explains. "That was fun and as a small reminder we have painted the study in a colour they left behind in a tin when they left - it was called Tardis Blue!"
